So I have a 12 plate diesel E250 Estate in manual form and about 4 weeks ago I had the clutch and flywheel done. Since then it's sounded louder particularly when the car is revving up. I can only describe it sounding more like a van, more of grunt to it, like there is a blow in the exhaust but there isn't.

Took it back to the garage and they took everything apart again thinking it could be a dodgy flywheel but they're confident it isn't. They are now telling me from the 'research' they have done and after speaking to a MB specialist that its more than likely the engine on it's way out.
Now just before I added this post I read somewhere that it could have something to do with engine/gearbox mounts. This makes sense after having the gearbox out, doesn't it?

I'm worried because I use the car for work and its on 255k miles, doesn't get ragged about though and its mainly motorway.

Anyone else have experience of this noise? Any advice appreciated

Depends on the noise. I wonder if something on the inlet side of the engine was damaged when the flywheel was changed if the engine was dropped at the rear. I am thinking the intercooler and the flexibles associated with it may be leaking??

Well there is definitely nothing leaking on the floor and nothing visible leaking underneath the bonnet. Hopefully i'll know more by the end of the day when I get them to check the mounts, are they easy enough to tell if they're on their way out?

My mounts were bad in my cls. And it effected it by the car shuddering when I put in R with my foot on the brake , I thought I was in trouble but the new mounts all round made it like a new car.

You probably need to have a proper MB expert look at it , your garage is obviously guessing, at your expense

The above, and the possibility of a component slightly displaced and creating a 'noise path'.

agree with whats been said, is this the OM651 engine? I had a slightly stretched timing chain which was replaced with the tensioner, the engine is definately quieter now, but the most noticable noise was on cold starts where it would ratlle/clack clack for a good 5 seconds. Mines a C250 2012 plate.

It might not be this but listen for a loud clack noise on cold starts, its a tell tail sign.

I am only guessing though :)

My C250 CDi got steadily noisier and noisier until the engine noise was audible across the rev range - it too sounded like induction noise. I had the 2 engine mounts and the gearbox mount replaced and it is now like a new car -quiet and refined at all speeds. One of the mounts ( they are hydraulic) had totally collapsed. Car has 130k on it. Worth checking yours -I assume they have been replaced at some time previously given your mileage, and the indy who did mine said they usually last about 120k miles before degrading.

New engine mounts are about £70-£90 each and the gearbox mount is much less, easy to change. Find a different mechanic...tomorrow.

Definitely check the engine mounts first to see if they have collapsed. They make a huge difference to the sound of the car. My wife's so was literally like a new car after they were done. The problem is that they deteriorate slowly so you don't really notice the change.....until it sounds so rough you start to worry.

Did they remove the engine to change the tensioner? I am having a headache with this timing change. See my dilemmas here >>>:

Appreciate all your responses, I'll update you all on what happened and its laughable. They basically took everything apart and put it all back again, got back in the car, started it up and it sounded quieter! Although its now sounding louder when the engine is cold, once its warmed up the noise isnt there. What the hell is going on!?

Think I'll get a new gearbox mount fitted on the next oil change going off what you've all told me.
