I'm considering laying cushionfloor/vinyl or a lino type of thing on the garage floor. 6" of concrete laid on a membrane dpc. 6m x 3.5m. Can get an end of roll for £75.

Anybody think of any reason why that would be a totally stupid idea?

Actually I have carpet tiles on my garage floor. But the car never sees the inside of it!!

Depends on how old the floor is?
If its quite young, say for arguments sake under 12 months, then its still full of water and needs to dry out. So obviously the vinyl is a bad idea as it will stop the evaporation.

Well half of our garage actually has Carpet!! :D:o

.....who uses a garage for their Car anyway! :dk:

Since you ask; me, actually two cars. Sorry to those who've seen this before. Anybody got any serious objections to using vinyl (other than incorrect spelling :wallbash:)

Very interesting. Now put a roofrack on and you have a double decker.

Back to your question. I have carpet tiles. My brother has tiles, vinyl of a reaonable quality ( not too soft ) would be a good job. It will improve the look and will also make it a lot easier to clean and dry etc. Go for it.

If you are going to park a car on it, the vinyl might squash under the wheels after it has repeatedly been left on the same spot. Makes a sort of mess of the look of the vinyl, can't describe it very well, mine discoloured and had an imprint. Retains it's qualities as a covering of a concrete floor that you can wipe or sweep easilly though, depends why you are doing it.

I should add mine wasn't so much a plan, more some unwanted houshold vinyl I threw on the garage floor as it was easier to put it there than do anything else with it. Maybe there are products that will work.

I ideally want mine painted but am so hesitant, not wanting to choose the wrong product or prepare the floor wrong (read many a story of it all gone wrong).

As pointed out vinyl is a bad idea if the conctrete floor is relatively new as it will still be losing its water content and strengthening.

If you want to do it properly see HERE

I am actually the same as some others and my garage which houses the CLK is carpeted, SWMBO says car is more cossetted than her :D

Cheers. Should have added earlier the concrete is coming up 4years old so should be OK. Does carpeting not retain water? The SL gets dried off when it's wet but not the 211. Then it drips puddles on the floor overnight which soak into the concrete. I was hoping that I could mop up from vinyl;).
Take your point about leaving impressions; maybe I'll go for old fashioned lino which didn't compress. Son has a wetroom which is floored with hard 'sparkly' type of lino stuff which would be good but I've a suspicion it will be expensive. Anybody know what that stuff is called?

That stuff is great but very expensive... just to do my 4 car garage the materials were coming to 3K.

Yeah you are quite right the CLK is in a single garage next to the house and when I priced it it was about £700 for mine

As my CLK is only a summer car and odd weekends it never goes away wet hence carpet was not a problem.

At those prices you could supply and fit an imported Porcelain tile on the floor which would be more agreeable in every respect other than not being able to take it with you if you move.

Why not have it ashphalted/bitumen ? A mate had his conservatory floor done, 16 square metres, 20mm thick for £225 so about £14 a metre .

I used concrete floor sealant followed by grey garage floor paint. It will last well if it's been properly prepared (ie well swept, properly sealed, sealant left to dry before painting, paint given time before trafficking)

If you intend to do 2 or more coats, used red paint underneath & grey paint on top- this way you can easily see where you've not put a thick enough layer down.
