We bought some Cupressus Wilma Goldcrest (according to the card anyway) which started off well with fertiliser, they were getting 6 hours of sunshine per day and were being watered - and have suddenly gone brown in places after a couple of months.

It seems to have stopped progressing and stayed as in the picture for a while now - I thought they'd died initially.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

They have had it sorry. Conifers: brown patches / Royal Horticultural Society

Looks like establishment failure- common cause poorly rooted plants in an exposed area are blown about by the wind sufficiently to break the tiny root hairs that absorb nutrients and water at the macroscopic level.

Technically speaking they are knackered. They don't like being in pots and I too suspect wind damage.
