Mercedes Vito Campervan 1996
Hi
I have an old Vito campervan (1996) with an intermittent gear fault. Sometimes when you start the engine, after stalling, it clunks putting the gear stick into drive and then is clearly not going into 1st. When driving it then doesn’t go through the gears and feels as if it’s in 3rd all the time. Another time it works perfectly fine, going through all the gears. It will do the fault one time and then after switching off the engine and then re- starting it goes into the fault mode. We’ve had the gear box oil changed and the hydraulic block control unit changed (at the MB garage in Manchester) but fault remains. Any thoughts would be so welcome. ( could it be electrical and not a mechanical gear box problem?) Thanks

Well you have the 722.6 5 speed box in that Vito,it is a good solid box, have you ever had it serviced how many miles has it down,,have you looked at the electrical connection to the box,oil sometimes gets into it and causes all sorts of problems .

We have had it serviced, yes. It’s done 62,000 miles. They have never mentioned looking at the electrical connection but they might have looked at it. We have always wondered if the problem was electrical rather than mechanical

They didn’t really know what caused it. They thought replacing the control unit might do it but it didn’t!
Horrible when even garage doesn’t know proper head mess and the cost in getting to solution hope someone on here can shed light for you.
