I've got a problem with the gear selector in my 210 E Class, it operates OK, but sounds odd and grates slightly when moving it. At each position, there is a strange sound as it locates itself, a kind of decaying vibration at each position, as if whatever locates each position was loose and oscillating for a moment.

A quick look by removing the wood panel hasn't revealed much of the mechanism, does anyone have any suggestions what to do?

You might be describing worn bushes on the gearchange linkage below the car, a common problem and inexpensive to replace.

+1

Almost certainly a worn/broken bush underneath. Something like £1 and 30 seconds to swap :)

Thanks guys, is that something I can see easily if I crawl under?

You'd need to jack it up, but yep - you can see the selector rod from the gearbox to the shifter. There should be a bush and a metal clip at each end, I suspect one of the bushes has gone.
