Gear won't shift out of "P"

My skilled mechanic got me a quote of 300 pounds for an autobox as my selector is bad. The autobox out of stock - he says it will take 15 days to arrive. Till then he'll see if can work some sort of a fix. He'll let me know tomorrow.

Malcolm, do you suspect its something other than the selector?

The car only has 17,000 clicks on it. Its been stored most of its life. The PRND visual in the instrument cluster also began showing a blank the last time I tried to fix it.
