is there a way to reset the gearbox on a c32 , or do you have to disconect the battery

The closest DIY is to:

Have ignition on
Hold accelerator flat for 10 seconds
Whilst still holding accelerator turn ignition off & keep foot down for approx 1 minute.

you will find it changes more smoothly but it doesn't last long!

^^ that doesn't work.

The ONLY way is with a Star.

I know it doesn't reset, hence the DIY comment & that it doesn't last long, but that procedure does smoothen the gear changes for a little time.

Placebo effect

New one on me, I'm a Merc newbie-ish owner and learn something new every day.
Is there any benefit or need for this?

Can't you get the same effect from disconnecting the battery?

Or alternatively from removing the TCU fuse (assuming it has one)?

Dont know about the fuse/battery but the procedure mentioned works for me.

Do this at your own peril. I did it on my C240 V6 after it had a new engine fitted. I just thought it might might give everything a freshen up.

Immediately the gearbox started to misbehave. Changing up when not required and sticking in gear when pulling away from a standstill. Some Googling revealed that this procedure is linked to throttle position and NOT gearbox. It also will affect different models in different ways. On one of the US sites there is an entire thread dedicated to this very procedure with examples like mine. Along with people who swear it has made a positive difference to their cars.

Bottom line is with my C240. It had to go onto STAR and have the adaptive values re-set. That was an immediate and very noticeable change. Car now drives as it should with very smooth changes.

Andy at WrightTec agreed with Olly's post.

STAR is the way to go if you want it done properly.

From what I could gather, at least for 7g boxes, the accelerator pedal/ignition key procedure doesn't reset the ECU- it does however recalibrate the accelerator and throttle- i.e. aligns full throttle with the pedal being fully down, and minimum throttle with foot off accelerator. Presumably, if the procedure isn't done correctly (either not fully depressing or fully releasing the pedal) it will make the pedal more sensitive in middle positions, and ineffective towards the extreme positions.

Incidentally, 7g Driver Adaption automatically resets (to least sporty driving style) every time the ignition is turned off.

I agree with olly once dealership mentioned the only way a transmission can be reset is using a star.
