The gearbox stopped working last night.

I managed to get home in first gear which was very uncomfortable especially for everyone following me at 30mph :-(

I can put it into first and reverse and when i do it really clunks/thuds into those gears. The warning lights ABS and BSR now come on after having taken the battery off to try and reset the system however I changed the break switch last month and have not had these errors errased from the system.

Would this be a clutch or gearbox issue? Any help greatfully appreciated as I have no idea what to do next bar taking it to the stealers.

1st thing you should do is get the car up to running temp and then check the level of the gearbox oil with the engine running. also look under the centre of the car where the gearbox sump pan is and see if there are any signs of ATF (transmission fluid) leaking. also check the ATF pipes around the engine bay aswell.

i guess if its severely low you could check it without the engine running.

even if you dont have a dipstick on your model (cant remember if my 208 used to or not) you could get some wire and feed it down the tube (which will be there) and see if there is a decent amount of oil in there. bear in mind it needs to be set at a very specific level so unless you can obtain a dipstick for the right gearbox you'll be best to get a specialist/dealer to correct the level, that is after any other leaks are sorted.

EDIT: i assume since being a 320 (which isnt an AMG by the way :p) its an auto gearbox, if not ignore the above!

Unfortunately I know it's not an AMG; however it does have the AMG body kit and wheels etc. :-)

So it could just be something as simple as low gearbox oil then?

i'm no expert but it would be the 1st thing i'd check. if its a new problem thats suddenly happened, then i'd also suspect a leak somewhere.

Cheers SilverSaloon I'll get it checked.

Cheers howard. I'll mention it to the guys tomorrow.... they'll probably just laugh at me though :-) oh well

It will fault again.

Speed sensor issue probably.

They seemed to think it was the speed sensor also. Any idea what the part number?

Are the speed sensors external or internal within a MB gearbox?.....the only reason I asked is that I just had to have our VW Touran gearbox fixed as a speed sensor had gone down and it was internal and was a suitably expensive job in the process!!!!....groan.

Its a common problem on the tiptronic box W208 the part is about £150 from MB dealer plus fitting and reset .

My yr 2000 w210 is showing the same fault, and it even popped it'self into neutral while going up a hill at about 40mph on saturday, and I wasn't even thrashing it, that was the final straw.

ATF was changed 2 weeks ago and made no difference except making it smoother when the gearbox was working properly. So looks like it's either the speed sensor or engine mounts, probably the former as it's only got 74k on the clock, but then again the car has begun to vibrate a bit more than it used to when at idle so it could be engine mounts???

It's all bit academic as today I sold the car back to the colleague I bought it from because of the problems I've had with it and my wife doesn't like driving our 2 young children around in it any more. He was good enough to give me my money back and lend me his volvo V70 until I find another car. I think if I ever buy another Merc it will be a much newer one. It's been an education, as
they say, and quite enjoyable at times, i.e when the car worked, even the time I've spent on this forum trying to work out what is wrong with it has been quite fun.

Dipstick

Hi, I have a w208 CLK 320 and am going through the tranny problems discussed. Fortunatly I work in garage so have some time to spend on it. However I dont have the dip stick. Where can I get one from?
I havent called merc yet because I imagine theyl either be reluctant to even sell me one or at least be quite expensive in the way we all know and love.
If anyone could tell me where to get one i'd be super greatful. I miss my benz!!!
Cheers.
Ed.

Hi,
MB will/should sell you a dipstick, IIRC for about £35, or look on E-bay for "sealey dipstick", or with a bit of flexible curtain wire you could have a go at making one, do a search on the forum as the measurments are on here somewhere.

I paid about £4 inc p+p from some one Ebay, there were a few.

Sometimes when I start car, as you go to reverse it jerks backwards then move on to drive and you get a jerk forward, if you drive you get first gear only if you try to shift to park stops at neutral unless you turn off ignition. Go through this stop start a few times and it's ok again for a day or two or maybe an hour!!!
Spilt a bowl of water in the back behind passengers seat now floor in front footwell is very wet is there something there that doesn't like the damp, have been told that gear selector unit is at fault

Does not sound like the faults on the old thread you have added to. May well be just gear selector, so probably suggest you start a new thread on the subject?
