Hi

I've got a problem with my 99 e300td auto gearbox, on cold days it wont change up for the first couple of miles. Also it at the same time doesn't want to pull away, it like a clutch slipping.

The w/s setting don't seem to do anything either.

This is a bit of a problem, I've had the fluid changed last year ( the car has done 175K miles).

Any ideas, it works fine after about 5 mins?

My 1975 coupe is reluctant to change into top when its cold, hangs in third gear for an extra 1000rpm or so untill i have done a couple of miles when it goes back to normal, i put mine down to having 277000 miles on the clock and being 34 years old though. :D

Cold Auto

I have a 1996 C180 and mine holds the gears changes for a lot longer when cold but after a mile it's ok. Mine is meant to be that way because it aids the warm up of the engine and is normal.

You need to check the fluid level - who did the change for you - someone who knew what they were doing for sure? Maybe you have a leak; could be either from a corroded cooling pipe going to the rad or maybe from the sump (overtightened bolts from the change?) - either way you need to stop driving it like this - you will damage the gearbox and that will be expensive!

I would say change the oil again and go from there.

I had it changed by PCT ( local ind MB workshop) and the level is full. Does anyone know what the cost is of a new gearbox or tourqe converter?

well, lets just hope that it keeps working for abit longer. I think £2700 is probably what the cars worth!!!!

How do you know the level is full, have you got a dip stick for the ATF ?

Just checking as this could be the 1st thing to do. Pop back to PCT and just get them to check it quickly I say.

Cheers

New is not the same as "another" a second hand box if you can fit it yourself will be less than half that i would guess, if not its possible to have autoboxes repaired, there are specialist compaines for this, also its usually possible with a car written off by a mechanical fault to make more money on it by breaking it for parts rather than selling it as a non runner.

Hi
My car sounds very similar. Not sure whether to sell quick or run it into the ground! Let us know if you solve the problem.
