Does the service include draining the torque converter oil, or is this an extra.
It’s a 7g box.

Depends who does it and wether or not you have a TC drain plug (not all cars do ) . If you don’t , MB probably won’t disconnect the oil cooler lines and drain the TC .
An MB Indy will normally do a full oil change , TC drain plug or not , and they will be cheaper

My 7g+ box has a drain plug for the torque converter, and the dealer drained it when changing the ATF (well, or at least they said they did..........). It was done under Service Care Plan BTW, so no idea how much they would have charged for it without the plan.

They quoted me something like £470 for my c250 7g+.

£220 at a merc specialist.

Thanks for the replies.
It appears this is a bit of a grey area with no 100% answer. When I look at the MB service required for an gearbox oil change it’s not shown as to whether the TC should be drained also, feels a bit hit and mis to me.

Can I ask, did the MB specialist drain the TC or did you ask for it to be done, OneForTheRoad

Where do you live as far as Indy recommendations for your area goes ?

This is quite interesting, I’m starting to wonder if it’s down to the garage to make the call as to drain or not drain the TC

I’m near the A3 at Hook, Surrey

I put the money towards an e350 😁 and let the new buyer worry about it.

Quite agree W1ghty, especially now I know it’s 50/50. No point having only half renewed.

Very true , it’s 50% of the cost for 100% of the work at a good Indy and .....
100% extra at a main dealer for 50% of the work :D

Shocking isn't it. To keep little Louis fleeing around the tar mac . 😁😁

I think it's all down to what WIS says.

If WIS says that cars without a TC drain plugs don't need the ATF in the TC replaced, then dealers are obviously not going to carry-out the oil-cooler pipe disconnect method, because they will be working for free doing something that the car manufacturer never recommended.

I guess this is the same situation as with the ATF change interval. A specialist will recommend that it's done 'every' xxx miles or years, regardless of what ESS says. The MB dealer, on the other hand, will just do what ESS says, which will be 'every', ' once at', or 'never', depending on the car.

BUT - if WIS does say that the TC needs to be drained also on cars where the TC has no drain plug, then I think that it will be wrong of us to assume that all MB dealers will simply cut corners and not bother actually doing this. Instead, I think that the majority of dealers will follow WIS and do the job properly. Of course there will be isolated incidents where a combination of a lazy mechanic and poor supervision means that the TC drain was skipped, but I wouldn't expect it to be the norm.

So the next question would be, would you be happy if your TC was Not drained

No I wouldn’t be , especially as it is so little extra work to do it
