ml 270
went to main dealers today to order brake switch/oil seperator and accelerator assembly, reasonable price i thought (£80) so asked about oil change on box.full service including box and engine oil change £300 including vat asked about t/convertor, they cant do that and have never heard a way of doing it!.rang sheffields best auto box specialist(their words)they laughed at me as if i was a fool and said only way was to take the box out and turn it upside down! now call me old fashioned but i cannot allow anyone to work on my car if they dont do their homework. if they call themselves specialists i expect them to be just that ,and that includes main dealers.

Well in a way is true, you cant drain the torque converter directly but you can flush the fluid out of it..

exactly! so why dont they say that.these things are not trade secrets. but to pay for a oilchange thats not strictly an oilchange but a partial one hurts.some garages realise the benifit of doing this and will go the extra mile, unfortunately none near me.

There are several ways of doing a complete oil change including the torque converter. One method involves just changing the oil and filter in the gear box then after a few thousand miles suck out the oil from the gear box via the filler tube and replace with fresh oil. run the engine a few more thousand miles and repeat the process. Effectively you dilute out the original oil. A second way (from memory - best to check out online)is to drain the gear box oil replace with fresh oil then remove the return oil cooler pipe turn over the engine to empty the torque converter. Then top up the gear box to the correct level. The exact procedure for doing this can be found online.

Isn't there a well regarded auto box specialists in Barnsley? Martin Lowe Transmissions or something similar, near the football ground.

They serviced me an A8 4.0TDI Quattro 'box (ZF from memory) although the after was no different to the before with that one. There's a how to on here also for the 722.6 box but I have no idea if that's as fitted to your ML.

cheers, i have seen the how to guide and very good it is,however i need a ramp. i mentioned this to two local auto specialists and they were not interested! the lad i used on my toyota landcruiser says bring me the (how to) and i will do it. my beef is two fully fitted auto specialist sic cannot be bothered but one who has never done it before will!
some have pride in what they do, others just do it to earn money who do you want to work on your car?.

All this because they decided to stop fitting drain plugs (a part costing only a few pence!) in the torque converter after 2001 - big mistake!!

Thankyou.

yes it is. just a shame to far away otherwise i would be there like a shot.how many merc owners in sheffield and derbyshire would love to have someone like black c55 on their doorstep.

If you are looking for an indi in the Nottingham/Derby area I've found M B Service Centre Ltd at Blidworth to be very good. M B Service Centre Ltd (01623) 792948 Leach Way, Mansfield, NG21 0RU.

thats good news thanks .do you think they would do the full auto box change

I can't comment on them doing a complete atf change. But what I can say is that they did a fantastic job of removing the black death resulting from a leaking injector. They cleaned it all out, fully tested the injector, re-cut the injector seat, cleaned out all the threads over and over then replaced the injector using a new seal and bolt to the correct torque. I would give them a ring and ask.

Did you manage to get your fluid changed?

not yet, goes into main dealer tue for new a/pulley (bouncing belt)+wheel alignment, had new t/rod ends replaced couple of months ago and not satisfied that they aligned them correct.I replaced oil/sep ,brake switch and acc pedal and when I picked parts up they quoted me £250 to replace pulley and alignment so went for it!.wont allow them to do oil change or tran oil change.

ps did contact them about gear/box oil change they have not replied yet
