doesn't sound right to me, are they right?

Get it done. MB said some were sealed for life then later on added a service schedule IIRC.

Sorry cannot recommend anyone but someone should be able to

Looking at the service records for my car, the fluid in my 7Gtronic box has been changed twice.

I've got no idea what it cost, but it was done by a main dealer both times.

This subject has been discussed many, many times all over this forums.

The general consensus is:

The 'sealed for life' thing is complete Boll*cks

Most MB independent garages do this job regularly.

Ask them to change ALL of the fluid , including that in the torque converter.
Usually costing you 8/9 litres of ATF if done correctly.

They will drop the gearbox sump cover which allows easy access to the filter.

Expect to pay between £150 and £200 depending.

Get it done...yesterday.

Good luck :thumb:

Well in fairness to this new member, the question has been asked before ,but it is a valid one, never trust anything that says sealed for life, when Fords decided that the Escort rear axle was sealed for life we all fell about laughing, your gearbox needs a oil change, find a decent local mechanic who knows what to do or a indy mercedes mechanic, many owners on here change the gearbox oil every 30,000 miles to be on the safe side.

thanks for your patience and prompt replies..
i will try and find a good mb garage as local as poss.
thanks again:D

I know there is an automatic gearbox service place near me (Brighton). They said for a full service it'll cost £250. Is it worth getting it done? Mines done 97000. 2003 though so getting on a bit.

Do you have any history for the car??? If not get it done!!! first oil change is normally at 37K mine was done again at around the 70K mark mine is now just comming up to 112K so expect it to have another one done next year

That sounds expensive for a Mb indy it should be 150-200.

The 7 speed box is more expensive to service than the 5 speed, if the £250 is inclusive of VAT it is ballpark.

Don't think it's a MB specialist. They do any gearbox as far as I'm aware.

I really would recommend an MB-experienced specialist. I feel sure you must have them around Brighton. Anyone know someone in Brighton?

I know for a fact that John Haynes in Worthing is a highly experienced specialist in MBs. He's done some stuff for me over the years and quality is excellent.

Without trying to hijack this thread but can anyone recommend a good MB Specialist in essex for a Transmission change i'm at 37500 miles and also due a Cat B service.

Mercedes quoted an eye watering £292 for a service and £316 for the transmission oil change this morning.

If Milton Keynes would be not too far for you, autoclass Mk are recommended here on forum, i asked for some quotes and they quite reasonable.

It's not to far at all it's more a case i'd have to wait around till the car is ready but i'll certainly drop them a line Thank you very much :)

Good Morning Autoclass in MK have quoted £205.00 for the Transmission oil change if it helps anyone :)

Thank you Sosen13 for recommending them i'm all booked in.

How far are you from London?

Harrow/ Nw London is within an hours reach of Essex and home to undoubtedly one of the best MB specialists in the UK, 'Wayne Gates Mercedes' there is a waiting area or town centre is just a short walk away.

No problem at all. Exactly same price I was given.
Let us know about your experience with them and if they do full gearbox service within this price (filter and all the oil, as apparently there are 2 ways to do it)

Not far but i have given the tranny change the MK and they where very very helpful offered a free lone car and even to drop me off at the town centre whilst i wait. So there customer service so far is spot on and they did say that they do change ALL fluids including what's in the torque convertor if there is a drain plug ("some don't have them") and replace the filter.

I know Harrow very well i grew up in NW9 so what i may do is drop them an email for some pricing as i haven't booked the service in yet due to time constraints and my old man lives in Northolt so could get this at a more leisurely pace around the family not only that i may not be able to get to MK all the time.

I'll keep everyone updated to how i get on because i'm very much one of those people that when i find something i like i don't change it but am very very critical initially.

I would like to add however that all my mercs i have used Merceded Waterhouse in Chelmsford and they have always been very very good to me especially with my first car a C240 w202 i done all the work myself and they guided me and helped me alot so it's nothing personal it's just £316 is a bit hard to chew on.
