Left the car in situ for the last couple of weeks, and upon driving it out the garage spotted a little patch of clean red oil from the area of the gearbox sump.

any ideas what could be the cause? my indi ais a 60 mile drive away, so will it be safe to drive? or should i top up the trans oil a little before heading out?

it didnt pour out it only dripped, about 2 tablespoons worth over the 2 weeks, overnight it dripped one spot.

any advise, ideas, possible causes would be great!

    Thanks

I'm no expert, but if its hardly losing any, you should be fine driving to an indy and getting it checked... but it sounds like your seals... unless its done this before?

Probably the electrical connection socket leaking and dripping down the box.

If it is this item it is easy to change by yourself.

Tools needed. 7mm small long socket.

    Pilot bush, £7.

    Undo electrical connection.
Undo 7mm centre nut in old bush.
    Pull out bush
Push in new bush and carefully tighten. Warning, do not over tighten.
    Replace plug, job done.

If it is the electrical connection, Id also check the gearbox ecu aswell. The fluid travels along the cable and lands up in the ecu.

Is there a specific ATF that I should replace it with?

Dexron III spec or equivelant will be fine.

My sump gasket seeps, even with the bolts torqued to correct nm. and that was after an ATF and gasket change last year.

I just live with it till the next change in a few months time.

ok, changed the electrical plug guide this morning, the guides on benzworld are pretty spot on. it was pretty messy down there, as i also have a small engine oil leak, cleaned it up after the change, and will check again next week to make sure ive diagnosed it right.

leaked abt 600ml of atf whilst doing the swap, so i replaced that and a little more to account for the leaked fluid.

still cant get a reading with a homemade dipstick, so im gonna buy a proper one.

just Jacked the car up this morning to make sure nothing was leaking, i found it was still leaking but not at the electrical connector, but at the back of the gearbox, a couple of drips off the rear mount, any ideas what could be leaking from the rear of the gearbox?

I suspect it's the sump gasket or rear oil seal.

BTW use MB ATF. Dextron III is NOT good enough.
