The gearbox in the GF's sprinter (722.3) is playing up

symptoms:-

drives off perfectly in 1st or Reverse

changes up perfectly when cold

when hot (10 miles? driving) drops a gear - as in it no longer drives the only gears to engage are 1st and 2nd.

2nd at 4000 rpm = 35mph

push lever to N for a second or two, then back to D and it sometimes engages 3rd or 4th - continue for a bit, then it 'drops' it again.

Ive just replaced the transmission fluid inc the torque converter, no change.

This suddenly happened yesterday night. It has been 'flaring' between changes in 3rd to 4th - it no longer seems to do that with the new oil.

Removing the kickdown cable (or 'control pressure cable') and / or the modulating pressure pipe makes little to no difference to the problem (it does make a difference tho' - just doesnt affect the 'wont go out of 2nd' problem

Any ideas?

Aparantly the B2 piston problem doesnt affect gearboxes this late (its a S reg 1999)

TIA

Guy

update...

replaced the gearbox fluid and torque converter fluid, and cleaned the sump...

1->2 shifts now lovely and smooth - but still no 3 or 4 when hot.

drained again, and took off the valve body (actually a lot easier then i thought - just 15? 8mm bolts

took the body to George Fraser who sniffed it :) and reckoned the clutches were burnt... :(

borrowed his parts washer and cleaned it (including all 20 spool valves  and 25 springs :eek  ) Thanks George. Bought new filter (tenner :p) from George

re-installed

now have 1->2->3 all good, bit of 'flaring' from 3->4

good enough for me :)
