Gearbox Problems

I'm looking for a bit of advice on my 55 plate E280 merc. I have the following code come up on my diagnostics machine C404, The gearbox sometimes cycles through the gears PRND no problem but from DNRP its fails to go any further than N unless i either switch the engine off or VERY LIGHTLY press the brake pedal then it will engage. I have changed the gear selector from Dronfield but it was ok for a few miles then back to it normal. I'm now scratching my head as to what it could be any help would be very gratefully received.

Change the brake lamp switch above the brake pedal?

I've changed the switch but it makes no difference to it still the same C404 Code comes up

Maybe use an MB specific code reader like icarsoft or MB Star

long shot has anyone in the surrounding area have a star please I have a creation viii it clears the code but it returns as quick looks like a hard fault
