Hi Everyone,

I have a 2007 C280 W204, parked up almost 6 months ago because the gearbox is in what I would desrribe as limp mode as its banging between P/R/N/D and won't shift above first in drive.

I scanned it with a code reader and got 'P0717 – The Signal From Component Y3/8N1 (Turbine Speed Sensor, VGS) Is Not Available' which after googling and searching on here is the TCM in the gearbox gone bad and it needs to be removed and rebuilt.

I've contacted every independent around the North East and nobody wants the job to fix it, I suspect the 7G gearbox is putting them off :(

Would anyone be able to advise of anyone in the North East they have used for similar issues, or even if anyone on here wants paying to come out and do it... As it stands I've had this Merc parked on my drive for over 6 months with the best offer I've had just to get rid of the thing being £120 from a local scrap car dealer.

TIA

Only one I can think of is Easi Gears in Stockton. I can’t tell you anything about them, as I’ve never used them, but they’ve been in business a long time 👍

Easi gears should do an exchange unit . They did for me many years ago. Won't be cheap though . Or as above buy a box from a breakers and have it fitted , the lads at Sunderland on the 1231 are knowledgeable people.

Thanks all, I've tried Easi Gears and the guy I spoke to (I think Leigh?) told me that the 7G gearbox doesn't have a conductor plate so my diagnosis was wrong and they would need to look at it first but couldn't give a price for diagnosis or anything over the phone so didn't fill me with confidence. I've tried to reach Wearside MB on phone and email to no response. Im just going to go with plan B and scrap it, too much of a headache

Are you sure it's not just an engine fault ?

I don't think so, I just have a cheap obd that connects to my phone so I cant clear the code or anything to see it its even just a one-off but the code I got was for a gearbox sensor P0717.

As it stands though I can't drive it myself to a garage to have them plug it in and have a look properly due to the fault + I dont want to pay the cost of transporting it on a flatbed to a garage that wont at least give a ballpark figure for looking at it.. Posting the fault on here was just a last resort to see if there was some backstreet garage or something that I hadn't heard of or tried to contact already

Have you considered a mobile Mechanic that would come to you and diagnose rather than transporting the car to a garage.

Yeah I've contacted a few but none near me have STAR diagnostics so they would be as much use as me with a phone app
