Hi All
ive recently repaired the automatic 5 speed gearbox and sump is cleaned out and wish to know how much fluid it takes < ive bought 6 litres of ATF LV fluid ive not removed the fluid from the torque converter just the sump quantity the car is a 2002 with a petrol 2.0l non supercharged and fitted with a 5sp auto transmission

You need a dipstick to set the level correct.

Plenty on various sites and lots of videos on YouTube.

Plus the level needs to be checked with the fluid at 80 Degress C.

If you have just removed the sump and replaced the FILTER of course, then you will have lost about 3-4 litres
but as above check at 80c and use the proper dipstick.

This is something I have been struggling with as Im a new MB owner. Very conflicting views regarding this matter. Here is my take on it, and what I have done to get the proper levels. First, get the proper dipstick. Not sure what places offer it in the UK, but plenty on ebay and the like. Dont chuck in the the whole 4 or 5 litres, its easier to add fluid than to take out the exess filled. Gradually add fluid and give it a chance to settle in the sump, with a measurement after each top up, until dipstick shows between the two lines above and below the 25deg mark. Once it is around the 25 deg mark, take it for a lengthy drive and recheck oil level. When transmission is at proper operating temp, it should be between the two lines above and below the 80 deg mark.

I hope it helps
