Being restored in Germany..

The rarest of the Rare! Talbir I think you should try to buy it, RHD too!

More pics here (if you read German ;-) )

All the Gullwing SEC's (the actual mechanical bits..) were made by SGS Styling Garage, (despite what name they were sold under) Chris Hahn there was the owner and specialises in convertibles and Gullwings for the auto industry.

I have the Gemballa book it refers to, hardback

Kind regards

Edward

I seem to recall working on that very car back in the '80s.
Where did you work? And which car, the red one or the blue one?

It seems there may be two blue ones.... Gemballa themselves re-made one in 2009 I have just found out.....

They are cool! I love the ones on the same period G Porsches with two sets of three etc

My Favourite of the Gemballa Mercedes' is Talbir's 6.9 SEC widebody, with twin double side exhausts!

 Hideous. Nice seats though...
I LOVE those seats.. Recaro C's I think they are called, any of those big bolster ones are amazing!

Along with the Big Clarion D Stack system hi-fis that came in some of these cars, to me its the 80's!

I dont agree with your Hideous comment, and note you drive an A5. The reason for noting this is because I see a similarity of line from teh B and C pillar back of these two cars, with the wide rear haunch over the rear arches (if I squint!)

Turns out this car being stripped and painted was the last car Gemballa worked on before his demise, in 2009. Interesting story, I am just getting all the details before I publish!

I don't like the gullwing doors, wheels, exhausts or body kit. The SEC is one of the few 80s/90s era Mercs I do like but I much prefer them unmessed with. But different strokes for different folks and all that, I can see why these would be interesting for fans of that sort of mod.

Right I have been in contact with Alexander Schwan at the restoration company www.carblast.de in Germany

This is the story:-

The car is owned by a South Afrikan individual. He had it restored by Gemballa in 2009. It was one of the small series production Gemballa SEC's that were made in steel not fibreglass in the 1980's, and is RHD.

Gemballa had the bodywork done by my contact at his company, Carblast GMBH, and these are what these photos are.

The car then went back to Gemballa to be painted by ANOTHER company, however apparently that firm may not have been paid by Gemballa because Gemballa then went into insolvency.

As we all know Uwe Gemballa the individual then went missing (in SOUTH AFRIKA - Coincidence!!?) and was sadly found dead a while later.

I hope the car was fully restored seperately to all this!

Thanks to Alexander for the photos! Seen being delivered back to Gemballa in its yard too

There's a white one living near Gatwick (fibreglass kit not steel)

Same owner as the C124 widebody kit.

They are tasteless yet cool all at the same time, it's a requirement that you wear espadrilles and a linen jacket with the sleeves rolled up when you drive it.

I was an apprentice at MB(UK) in Brentford during the first half of the eighties and I seem to remember working on a couple of these cars. I'm afraid, 30000 cars later, the details evade me!
