In addition to the new CLK-Class Cabriolet, three more new models in the SLK, the E and the CL-Class will take the limelight on the Mercedes stand at this year's International Motor Show in Geneva.
The new CLK-Class Cabriolet takes the pole position in its class in terms of design, technology, appointments and driving pleasure, thereby emphasising typical Mercedes exclusivity. Available with a choice of five different engines, this exciting open-top car offers an output range from 120 kW/163 hp to 270 kW/367 hp, which is unique in this market segment, and is also the only convertible in its class available with eight-cylinder engines. Moreover, the new CLK-Class Cabriolet also has outstanding aerodynamics (Cd figure 0.30) and its boot capacity of 390 litres (VDA measuring method) exceeds that of any other four-seater cabriolet. The newly developed soft-top opens and closes fully automatically at the touch of a button or by remote control.
With approx. 15 additional highlights which further enhance safety and comfort, the standard appointments in the new CLK-Class Cabriolet offer an added value of up to 2400 Euro versus the preceding model. These features include automatic climate control, radio, rain sensor, Headlamp Assist, remote roof operation, a height-adjustable, leather-trimmed steering wheel and automatic belt feeders for the driver and front passenger.
"Final Edition": Special SLK-Class series upholstered in fine nappa leather
Open-air driving pleasure of a very special kind is also provided by the "Final Edition" of the successful SLK Roadster, which Mercedes-Benz is also presenting to the public in Geneva.
Equipped with a vario-roof, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), Brake Assist, sidebags and the other technical highlights of the SLK-Class, the use of high-quality trim and the finest materials makes this special model particularly eye-catching. The radiator grille is painted in a chrome-silver metallic finish, working in conjunction with the highly polished aluminium trim strips on the A-pillars and vario-roof to characterise the exclusive appearance of the Roadster. 16-inch light-alloy wheels in a five spin-spoke design accentuate the car's sporty and elegant presence.
The interior of the "Final Edition" cossets the SLK's occupants with newly designed sports seats upholstered in soft nappa leather in a choice of black or classic red. The same high-quality, natural material is also used to line the central areas of the door panels and the roll-over bars. For the centre console, shift gate and door handle surrounds the Mercedes designers have developed decorative trim of highly-polished, brushed aluminium. The instrument cluster is distin-guished from that in the standard SLK-Class Roadster by silver print on the dials and metal-coloured adjusting knobs for the clock and trip recorder. The "Final Edition" of the SLK-Class will be available from March 2003.
E 400 CDI: Eight-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 191 kW/260 hp
The world's most powerful V8 car diesel engine will become available in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class from spring 2003. This twin turbocharger power unit with commonrail direct injection and other high-tech innovations develops an output of 191 kW/260 hp from a displacement of 3996 cubic centimetres. By carrying out detailed improvements to the engine, the intercooling and the exhaust system, Mercedes engineers have achieved an output increase of 7 kW/10 hp in the new E 400 CDI compared to the V8 diesel models in the S, M and G-Class.
The maximum torque of 560 Newton metres, which becomes available between 1700 und 2600 rpm, is also among the very best for diesel passenger cars. It ensures rapid acceleration and powerful sprints: the E 400 CDI reaches the 100 km/h mark in just 6.9 seconds from standstill, and gives ample evidence of its impressive pulling power by taking only 6.7 seconds to sprint from 60 to 120 km/h. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. These are new best values for a diesel in this vehicle class.
Fuel consumption tests according to the New European Driving Cycle reveal that the twin turbocharger engine has other qualities as well: the NEDC overall consumption is just 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres, which means that with a full tank of 80 litres the E 400 CDI is able to cover a distance of more than 850 kilometres.In addition to a five-speed automatic transmission, the standard appointments of the new E 400 CDI include the electronically controlled air suspension system AIRMATIC DC (Dual Control), four-zone THERMOTRONIC climate control, 17-inch light-alloy wheels and power-assisted speed-sensitive steering.
CL 65 AMG: 1000 Newton metres of torque already available at 2000 rpm
Mercedes-AMG is the creator of yet another automotive masterpiece which celebrates its world premiere in Geneva. The new CL 65 AMG continues the success-ful twelve-cylinder tradition of Mercedes-AMG with an up-to-date V12 power unit which exhibits stunning performance characteristics. Thanks to twin turbocharging this engine develops 450 kW/612 hp and makes a remarkable 1000 Newton metres of torque available from 2000 rpm. This makes the CL 65 AMG the most powerful AMG model to date.
Thanks to this muscular AMG 12-cylinder powerpack the Coupé matches the performance of thoroughbred sports cars: from standstill the CL 65 AMG accelerates to 100 km/h in only 4.5 seconds (provisional figure). Its maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The new AMG engine is based on the 12-cylinder unit of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In addition to an increase in displacement from 5513 to 5980 cubic centimetres, numerous other modifications are responsible for the output and torque increase in the new CL 65 AMG. For example the AMG engineers have increased ther cylinder bore from 82 to 82.6 millimetres, lengthened the stroke of the crankshaft by six millimetres to 93 millimetres and increased the charge pressure of the turbochargers to a maximum of 1.5 bar. In addition they have used forged pistons, main and big-end bearings made from extremely high temperature and pressure-resistant materials and enlarged the apertures in the injection nozzles to achieve a higher fuel flow. Power is transferred by a five-speed automatic transmission with the SPEEDSHIFT function and steering-wheel gearshift. The exceptional torque of the V12 is always safely under control, thanks to modifications to various transmission components, the rear axle differential, the drive shafts and the wheel carriers.
Like all models in the CL-Class the new CL 65 AMG is fitted as standard with the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system, whose spring struts have been configured for greater stiffness in the high-performance Coupé.
