Hello Everyone,
I'm a new member to the club and thought I would share my experiences.
About 2 weeks ago I bought myself an E220 CDI Avantgarde Estate. The car drives beautifully and has a full MB service history. When I purchased the car I noticed it had a slight problem on idle, it was surging when in drive, I thought that this would be an easy fix and haggled the guy down by an extra £200 for this fault.
Searching thru forums I found it could be several faults causing the above symptoms, the belt tensioner, Alternator pulley or Air Flow Meter.
Going thru the bills and service history I noticed that the air flow meter had been replaced about 6 months ago by previous owner, so only 2 possibilites left, I replaced the belt and tensioner and alternator pulley (genuine), still the same. Baffled for a week, then decided to find out how much an AFM is. On checking a few internet sites the prices were between £65 to £90, I also checked with MB and astonishing it cost £65 with the VAT and in stock, Cheap compared to my wife's Toyota (£235).
I replaced the AFM and now the car is perfect.
On examining the two parts together, they were like chalk and cheese, the electronics on the non genuine was exposed unlike the genuine, the entry and exit of the flow of air was different as was the general quality and weight.
Lesson learnt, always buy genuine parts, cheaper in the long run!
