SL500 & The Fart Car
I just thought I’d provide some feedback on my recent experience with George Fraser’s recently.

On Saturday I got up bright and early and dropped my car off at George’s workshop for its 108k service. This is a major service for my model and one that I had been warned could leave me with little change from a grand at a main dealer.

I was greeted by  Angela, a very attractive and knowledgeable girl, who promptly booked me in and wrote down any concerns I had and what I wanted and did not want to be done to the car. I was then given the keys to my courtesy car which to my surprise was an old 300SL, which although showing its age slightly, was a delight to drive and felt really tight & mechanically sound. Certainly far nicer than being given a Corsa or Mondeo or something.

Five o’clock, and I returned to pick up the car and George was just finishing off. The car was then washed and dried while I was sorting out the paperwork. On being presented with the bill, I was pleasantly surprised. The total bill was 380+ VAT, of which nearly £200 was labour.  I was given a complete rundown by George himself as to what was done and what will need doing in the future (wishbone bushes showing signs of wear) including an explanation of what symptoms this displays etc. He went on to say he did some welding on some exhaust shielding that was corroded and vibrating badly. Sure enough, the noise has now gone.

The next day I opened the bonnet and had a poke around. Everything looked in order, new washers everywhere; new parts where they should have been nice clean oil, fluids, filters etc. The car feels like a different animal now. The tick over is smooth the vibrations have gone, the steering feels more precise…all in all I am a very happy with the work done.

My general feeling about George Fraser’s’ is that “what they say is what you get.” There is no bullsh*t, they get the work done and do it properly and efficiently. The staff are all friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. Another point to note is that one of the mechanics is a very talented woman ….this is something unfortunately all too rare in this industry and for many reasons I think it should be encouraged. After all, women’s attention to detail is generally far higher than that of us blokes. I thoroughly recommend this family business to anyone with a Mercedes Benz.

Thanks to all that recommended them to me.

For those of you that haven’t heard of the workshop before, you can find his details here

Well I had my Benz serviced by George today and also the plugs changed (all 12 of them). George said.....

" You've had your moneys worth out of them plugs then"

The guy really knows his stuff, Had an E class loaner and I echo spikes comments, I'm really impressed with the service I received, he saved me just over £250 on what my local dealer was going to rip me off....

One downer that I must mention is that one of the mechanics managed to damage my 2 front rims when he was getting it off the ramp....I mentioned this to George and he was most apologetic and offered to get them refurbed....

I'm still well impressed with the service though and would recomend him to anyone with any age of Benz....

He had a lovely old shape 600CL, totally AMG'd with what looked like 20"+ rims with what must have been 30 profile rubber as the side wall was non-existant.......

G,

sorry to hear about your wheels,

I work 10 minutes away from hanger lane! you shoulda called me for a mini GTG :) I guess you were busy hencer the loaner.

Everytime I go there they must really love me as I drive my own car on and off the ramp LOL. I shadow the mechanics when ther're working on the car and sometimes even help out! George is cool about that and I am happy that I can see whats going on with the car rather than if I was at the stealership just sitting in a waiting room while they are out thrashing the car!!!

Sorry to hear about your wheels again tho, is it bad? you going to invoice them? Hows the car running now?

KV,

I have just polished all of the edges of the rims at the weekend with Autosol, it took me ages, and I look after my rims like they are a baby!!!
I was gutted when i saw them as I'd watched the guy reversing it off the ramp and saw him hit the ramp legs loads of times as he was having problems getting out due to other cars being in the way... The good bit was that george could see that i wasn't talking crap as one rim had yellow paint on from the ramp!!!

It might polish out but I dont have any time until the weekend....

I'll mail u
