So.... I've been obsessed with German cars since my dad had a 911 2.4s in the early 80s.

I've had Mercs since I could afford them (now 41) and when I bought my E55K for long distance family trips I've been thinking about a line up of other German cars to round out the 4 decades of my life.

Is this just me?

So looking at your list of cars, are you looking for something from the mid 1980s?

An early Mk2 Golf GTi 16v, or maybe a Mk1 GTi Convertible

It all depends on the requirements, Sir.

There's Hart to Hart or Dallas. (Expensive and hardly practical in Scotland)

More "practical" might be JR Ewing's motor

But for a family man of 41, the unburstable is W123 is the default choice:

Epic sweaters over the shoulders/tank top smart casual action.

I would like to think that photo was taken outside an old Alpine castle, with views across lakes and mountains. But it might just be a factory car park near Stuttgart :)

An S Class would be nice. Did AMG do anything interesting to SLs in that era?

AMG were just a mod shop until 1999 when Mercedes took them over and started incorporating their work in their standard products with things like the E55.

Playing strict 1980's, the normal stuff was "just" big engined Mercedes.

Go big or go home.
450SEL 6.9 for the 70's
560SEC for the 80's
SL600 for the 90's

Even the Dallas movie crew took several series to promote JR up into at 560. From memory, both Bobby and JR started off with modest engined Mercs and then gradually got promoted to the biggest engines (500 SL for Bobby and 560 SE for JR).

But that's the 80's for you. "We all started off poor and then got richer than we ever expected."

I can't remember (and I was forced to watch it) JR owning a 560SEL. But he did have a 450SEL.
Oran Juice Jones had one when we caught his mrs walking in the rain. Pity, he without him was like cornflakes without the milk :(
