Hi

would be good to know, what is the best way to get the truest shine on all the grill metal bits on my w124. The grill looks great, but ofcourse, over the years , it slowly looses its true sparkle, but shiney none the less.

I mean is there a product other than what standard valets use, to make the grill and star and any chrome look factory new and gleeeeming...

thanks

Once you get all the traffic film & dirt off they should look much better. I then use car polish

The grille strips do corrode so I just replace them - they're about £2 each from a dealer

As Nick says above.

I'd maybe get a new grille insert as well (£10-20 - the plastic honeycombed bit) and replace all the chrome strips.

New bonnet star and laurel wreath badge maybe as well - sharpens the front end up no end.

As has been said the grille pieces are cheap - the metal pieces are less than a pound each and the grille is about 30 odd pounds (it is more than 10-20) so quite cheap really.

I beg to differ - the prices are nearly as I stated in my post  ;) :p

Hmm; maybe I have been ripped off then! I paid a lot more for my grille from MB dealer. :(

Solvol Autosol. Wonderful metal polish suitable for all chrome and bare metal. Available at all good motor factors, and Halfords

All the good advice above notwithstanding, there comes a time when replacing the strips (and the plastic insert) is worthwhille if you're keeping the car. I've done that on my W126 and it was certainly worth it to be free of the mini-dents and stubborn corrosion (even after careful cleaning). I'd suggest using a sealant after cleaning with Solvol Autosol, which is indeed a classic product.

What I'm still trying to find is a way of renovating the anodized aluminium window trim on the W126. There seems to be no way of restoring it once it's gone, and replacement is several hundred quid in parts, plus a fair bit of labour. All suggestions welcome.

hi

hi, i dont think my bits need any replacing, just minimal weathering over the last 15 or so years,

i might have to replace one chrome strip on rear quarter panel, as it has a tiny small finger nail ding to just change the way the light reflects of it, but you cant notice it.

The window frames on the w124 could do with a lil clean, Car has mainly been kept in garage, but shows minimal signs of weathering, though most would not recognise it

WD-40 is excellent for cleaning chrome.
