Given the choice of a W124 Coupe or a CLK 230, which one?

By the way, I came across a bit of information online that I would like to run by you since you seem to be very knowledgebale about the getrag cars. I read that only the 190 16V had a getrag. The 124 24V had a ZF/Sachs with a dogleg. Is this the case?

All Mercedes manual gearboxes found in the cars are made by Getrag, but only the dogleg 714.404 and 714.450 are referred to as such. This is to differentiate them from the normal h pattern gearbox'es.

The power delivery of the 300-24 doesn't work well with the gear ratio's of the standard 5 speed, so mercedes fitted the 714.450 "getrag" to this engine to suit it's rev happy nature.

The 320 being a cruiser with more low down torque and less revs, works better with ratio's of the normal gearbox.

Mercedes manual gearbox'es are like marmite, you either love it or hate it.

I personally hate any manual 124s,getrag or not.To make the most of a getrag you really have to drive it like you stole it and the best engine to match that is the 300-24

Maybe Carat 3.6 can confirm about the ^ statement as I don't know the sure answer to it

Thanks.

And did you type any special search terms to find that one getrag car or just looked through all the pictures? Most people don't put a picture of the gear knob.

So they have two dogleg transmissions for the C124, the 714.404 and 714.450?

And for the 300 24V I should look specifically for the 714.450? How do I identify it?

Thanks.

714.404 is found in the w201 2.3 and 2.5 16v, the 714.450 is the one that you will find in a w124.

The main difference between the two is the .404 has a short input shaft for solid flywheels, the .450 works with the crap daulmass flywheels found on the 6 cyl.

Just looked through manual 3l+ C124

Ok. This is what I was suspecting. I think it was just luck that somebody had posted a picture of the gear knob. The majority don't. He probably knew it was a Getrag and posted the picture to show to potential buyers.

I guess if I like a certain car, the best way is to contact the seller asking for a picture of the gear knob.
