I've decided to upgrade from my 2014 B1810 CDI to a 2018 (ish) GLC.

I test drove a 2017 GLC 350d AMG Premium Plus at the wekeend, and loved the engine. I'm currently trying to arrange a 250d for this weekend, but wanted to see if anyone could give me their thoughts on both?

Is the 250d a significant step down when driving in the real world?

Having had the B180 CDI since 2016, fuel economy isn't something I've needed to consider for a while! It regularly returns 38-40mpg on short trips, and hits 50-55mpg on the motorway, so I'm also keen to understand whether the 350d return of 40s mpg is also something anyone has acheived?

Any other opinions on the models are appreciated, thanks!

The 250d engine does a pretty good job in our C250d, but I’m sure the V6 is likely to be a more enjoyable drive (though my experience is limited to the E350d).

Thanks GeeJayW, appreciate your comments.

The V6 was very enjoyable, I'm just thinking that however good that 250d is, it will feel like a step down. I guess I'll find out this weekend!

There aren't as many 350d engines around compared to the number of 250d on the market, and they carry a premium of about £3-4k, so that may also help to make my mind up.

Not tried the 250 but the 350 was mighty, v smooth and v powerful and fairly economical.

As has been said the 350 is simply delicious and you would never be disappointed.

The 250 is perfectly acceptable on performance and will give a hugely better fuel economy. My stepson had a CLS 250 and we went on a 40 mile golf trip. He achieved 50mpg and my 350 achieved 38mpg.

As with all things it comes down to budget but I would try to get the best deal you can with a 350 but if that cannot be achieved then be very happy with the 250. The GLC is a lovely vehicle.

Cheers
Graham

I have a 350d v6 w213, around town in London i can achieve 26mpg, on long trips can achieve around 38mpg, with a heavy foot, and over 42mpg with a light foot, but is super smooth, w213 on 2018 is now a inline 6, so it’s even more refined I have read, not sure if the glc 2018 is also inline 6, if it is and your budget allows, then would test drive that also, to get a comparison.

Never seen 40mpg and I am a very careful driver!
I have managed around 42 max, at a constant speed of 70kph. But yes definitely won’t get 40mpg on short trips around town.

Took these pics today on a 40 odd mile drive with my E250.

Thanks all really appreciate the comments. It seems that the 350d V6 is great, but the 250d is acceptable and not sluggish, which is what I've read elsewhere.

I wrongly thought that the 250 petrol was introduced with the new model, but I've since seen that it goes back to 2018 versions. I've read that also is a decent unit, with performance sitting somewhere between the 250d - 350d. Having owned diesel cars for the past 20 years (all VAG / Merc), petrol hadn't crossed my mind, but I don't want to exclude it unnecessarily.

I am dead set on the spec of AMG, Selenite Grey, Night Pack, Premium Plus, so it's just the engiine to be decided on.

Thanks for all the comments!

Very jealous of those green bars, I've never even managed that in my B180 CDI!

Personally I’d avoid the 250 petrol. I drove it at the GLC launch back in 2015 and was told that there was no plan for it to come to the UK. In 2018 it seemed like it was introduced as a bit of a knee jerk reaction over diesel worries, but it really just seemed so thirsty compared to the diesels, without the drama of a 43 or 63 to justify it.

If you can get an earlier 350d with airmatic, they go like stink and still return a reasonable economy too 👍

Thanks JBD, appreciate the advice.

Funnily enough I've been looking into the Airmatic / Air Body Control, but it seems to be a rarely added option on the GLC.

One thing to note that it MB tends to bundle more options as standard with the larger engines, so a 350d will likely have better trim and options than a 250d, and this applies also to 'like-for-like' trim levels, e.g. even if both are 'AMG Line Premium Plus' etc, but it's worth checking the 2017 Sales Brochure to be certain.

That said... personally, I wouldn't by a Diesel car that uses AdBlue... but I do appreciate that there were certain years when MB sold almost nothing else, so choice is limited. If you must have an AdBlue car, then I recommend that you get an Approved Used car with 1-Year MB warranty, and then keep purchasing the MB warranty year on year.

Thanks @markjay - could you say a little more on your thoughts around AdBlue please?

The Diesel car that I owned didn't have AdBlue, but reading others' comments on here it seems that repair bills can run into 4 figures (though specialists are often cheaper than dealers).
