when I open any door the interior lighting does not come on. You can switch them on using the switches but they don’t come on by themselves. Is this normal operation, or is there some switch or option setting I should use?
I believe your car has the same front overhead control panel as the c class, in which case the 2nd switch from the left is the Automatic Interior light control. When the switch is flush with the control panel, it is on.

Thanks for the information. It turned out there are three buttons in the center. The middle and right buttons toggle the interior lights on and off, and always return the same position. The one on the left is a 'lights on/off' button. In the pressed in position (as shown) the lights are always off unless you toggle them on/off with the other two buttons. The light will not come on when you open a door. In the 'out' position (flush with the other buttons) the lights work automatically when the doors open.
