Hi Guys,

I currently have a CLA45 Shooting brake and I am looking to change to a 2018/2019 GLC63S but finding it hard to find the right spec. on used cars for sale.

Ideally I want the 360 camera and AMG performance exhaust but cant seem to find any with both these options so I guess I am going to have to compromise and do without one of them so the question is which do I do without?

Is the AMG performance exhaust that much better/louder than the standard one or is the 360 camera a must have?

I have the reversing camera on my CLA so not sure how much better the 360 is and also I put a Milltek catback on the CLA as even with the AMG exhaust it was a bit quiet but then it is a 2.0 four pot and not a nice V8.

Many thanks Nick.

I think you need to worry more about the crabbing noises that you will get on full steering lock for the GLC. But if you are already aware of this issue... I would say go for the exhaust, you got parking sensors as your aid for parking.

I can see why you want both options. On a few occasions I’ve wished we had 360 or front cameras on some of our cars but I don’t think you’ll miss it on the GLC: it’s neither wide nor low and so I think you’ll be fine without 360.

I suspect you’ll probably hanker after the exhaust more, however I have to say that once the novelty of the car has started to ease, the exhaust may not get used as much as you think - unless you intend to use it as a fun car.

It’s a wonderful dilemma to have, enjoy the search!

PS Buy winter tyres to stop crabbing. It gets lots of attention on Internet forums but expecting high performance tyres with low profile and stiff side walls to work without compromise in winter is an ask too far.

Thanks and yes I have heard about that I know someone who had a GLC43 and had the crabbing issue
a few years ago I had an SQ5 and that was like that too.
Yes I am thinking more exhaust as it has a reversing camera too.

Ive got a GLC - 360 camera is lovely and actually useful as you can see the front and the sides and protect your lovely wheels :-)

I like the performance exhaust, but the reality is its only the 15 year old kid the that switches it's into loud mode whenever he gets in the car. I like the driver assistance pack (just nice safety kit) and I happen to have ceramic brakes and they are wonderful - but I've never seen another GLC with them. They are only ceramic at the front but whenever I get in wife's mini the first time I brake I think "eek what's up with the brakes". The facelift has different tyres that apparently don't do the crabbing. Once I've worn out my (almost new) tyres I'll switch the o the facelift tyres (dunlop I think).

How old are you looking for ? I have a friend selling a facelift one - maybe sold already.

Cheers, I think the exhaust probably is the better way to go as mentioned it has sensors front and rear and reversing camera too so guess that will be good enough. I am assuming the reverse camera is the same as on my CLA and its far better than ones I have had on Audi's.

I will no doubt get winter tyres got a set for my CLA but guess they wont fit the GLC so will need to get some more for next winter.

Hope I can sort something out once lockdown is removed!

Thanks Richard.

I always bugger my wheels up so I guess could be useful for that!

I will be 40 this year but still love a nice sounding engine/exhaust!

The standard brakes should be fine I have standard ones on the CLA and they are pretty good although I know what you mean as my wife has a Countryman and brakes on that are rubbish in comparison.

I am looking for a late 2018 model SUV rather than Coupe, cant stretch to a facelift really and ones I have seen this age online are low £50k.

Cheers,
Nick

The reversing camera is very good, not sure how it compares to them CLA but I would say that it would be the same or better. Unfortunately the winter tyres won’t be compatible with the GLC but you could always sell them to part fund the new ones.

Totally agree.
My driveway is quite tight, with the house gable wall on one side, and a low wall on the other side.
Its a 1970's wide driveway and the E63 is a wide car, I find the 360 degree camera incredibly useful for reversing.
It would be a must have for me on any future car.

If u find a car with the 360 cam and no sports exhaust, would u consider having the secondary cats removed? Obv won’t be switchable but u will have both options ( sort of ).

Sorry mate only just seen this reply. I have found a car at the right price and better spec. with extra driving aids including the 360 cam but standard exhaust.
Yes I would consider removing the secondary cats I assume that doesn't **** up the MOT?

Didnt think the winters would be compatible but I gave someone interested in them anyway so hopefully can part fund new ones.

Hi J9NAC,

Hope I am not too late with this!

The 360 camera is really useful, on the exhaust question doesn't the car have the three settings "comfort - sport and sport+" I find ample exhaust noise on sport+

I think I remember that the fitment of winters on the 63 was not allowed due to its performance and beside you lose a lot of grip and tyre performance etc.
The crabbing is not fixable and MB have effectively washed their hands of the problem, its fixed on non AMG'S due to larger numbers.

I don't want to spoil you dreams but do check it out thoroughly try the car in cold conditions, a multistory is ideal, I found my first multi very embarrassing due to the noise bouncing of the walls and if you do a lot of tight turns etc it will feather the tyres quickly. Plenty of info on the GLC forum.

Good luck.

You can fit winter tyres to any 4Matic Mercedes with no absolutely no compromise in performance, they are standard fitment in Germany if you buy a new car in winter months. I have a set for the GT, however they are not cheap if you want them rated all the way to 186mph.

MB haven't washed their hands of it, you need to buy softer compound tyres for cold weather. Its only a problem in the UK because most of the buyers in the UK are too tight to fork out for a second set of wheels/tyres. The right set of winter tyres and your experience of the car will be the same year round, minus the crabbing.

Yep, winter tyres are not a problem on the GLC or any other AMG. I have them for most of mine, although I do have to set the speed limiter to 186 mph, so there is a degree of compromise.

Yes, you are right that winters can be fitted but there are a compromise on grip in summer.
But that is not the point changing tyres and wheels to cure a design problem is a fudge! and its disgraceful that MB have acted this way.

I shall be extra careful when and lf I buy a GLE.

Its not a design fudge, Summer performance tyres don't work below 10 Celsius. You need a softer rubber compound to be more flexible and allow the wheel to roll rather than skip at the extreme lock angles you have to use for multistorey car parks and the like. There is not a 'one size fits all' solution for performance vehicles.

Its not a compromise on summer grip, Conti winter Contact TS860 are an OEM approved match for cold weather performance equal to Pilot Sport 4S when the temperature is below 10 celsius. I haven't had a problem keeping hold of 630hp/900nm with them at all.

My advice is don't buy a GLE if you are not prepared to drop another £4k and up (£6k if you are on 21's) for a set of OEM winter wheels and tyres (none OEM will void your warranty on steering and braking components).

Thanks for the replies guys.
I am still looking for one at the right spec. to come along, found 2 online that both have the 360 cam and perf. exhaust and in budget so will see how it goes. Although I have decided 360 cam is more needed than the performance exhaust so if I miss out on these I am sure something will come up.

Will be sorting winter alloys and tyres out anyway when the time comes. I got a set for the CLA45 and used for two winters so would definitely get them again on any car I buy.

Winter tyres do compromise ultimate performance in Summer months but in my experience the compromise is better than Summer tyres in Winter months.

But really for a high performance car - or a regular car with high performance tyres - you can’t realistically expect a tyre to offer uncompromised performance in all weathers.

If you don’t like to accept compromises - and I’m the same - they you really should change over tyres to make sure you’re on the right tyre for the conditions.

I think that’s a good call. I would prefer the 360 cameras over the performance exhaust. Good luck with the search.
