Started having transmission issues on 2018 GLE a few months ago. Just approaching 67k miles. The gear change would struggle to engage when the car was not quite warmed up, especially pushing up hill etc and was getting worse by the day. Also hard to describe but it would feel like the lower revs of 4th gear were as if the car was being ‘weighed down’ for a few seconds before it snapped back to normal.
Main dealer advised trying some resets which didn’t really do anything then a transmission service was a good idea as no fault codes were showing. Had that done and technician reported metal fines in the oil so warned there may be a more serious issue but to see how it goes, but still no improvement.
Was advised at this point that the amount of metal found in the oil indicated a full transmission rebuild or replacement would be the only way to solve it. After pushing Mercedes for any goodwill on this with no result and asking around a few specialists for second opinions I decided to go down this route (replacement) rather than give up on the car.
It has been several weeks and several thousand miles since this work was done at significant cost, and unbelievably I’m still having similar issues. It’s been back to the dealer twice to check things over, reset the system etc but I’m in disbelief that this can still not be right! I’m told that it’s part of the new system bedding in and adapting, but it’s a really similar issue to before I had the whole transmission replaced, struggling to change into gear when cold and then stuttering changing into gear (quite severely) at speed when on faster roads in the first 30 mins or so of driving. The strange ‘weighed down’ pulling back effect is also stronger than before in low revs of 4th.
Any idea what’s going on here? Obviously I’m not accepting this from the dealer and my next step is to escalate it, but not sure what can be causing this as not getting any explanation. Where do I go with it, any advise appreciated.
