Had a side by side stint with my old man in the Golf tonight, from a rolling start at 15mph he floored the golf, I flooded mine and nothing happened! (I was in second gear)

The golf flew in first and second, and left me side by side upto 45mph.

From a standing start it would be different, and if I had kicked down to first it would have been different too, but just goes to show how much torque/speed these diesel's have now days

Wow Maff you must be psychic. We are just hearing form a new member how her Mazda rips her Step Dads CL55 to bits.

You obviously need a quicker car. ;)

Matt , nothing happened because you 'flooded' yours, perhaps it will be quicker once you get the water out of it !!

In fairness to those new Golf 2.0 Tdi s, they have one hell of a lot of low-down torque for a small-ish car and although they're not nearly as quick as any AMG V8, they have a real-world performance and agility which can often leave faster cars floundering....at least momentarily.

So much so, that.....ahem.....I've sold the recently-acquired C230K and leased the Golf GT 2.0 TDi 5-Dr from next week. Well, if you can't beat 'em..... :)

If you think the Golf TDI 140 is quick, wait till the 170's arrive. Coupled to a DSG gearbox, I think that will be quite some car!

Probably, but I'm only getting 37mpg from the 140BHP version, so maybe there's a point at which diesel torque and performance is outweighed by poor economy? I mean, the 200BHP petrol GTi can achieve 30MPG, so the new 170 diesel version would have to be really something to win over most buyers. Plus, the price difference between a GT TDi 140 and a GTi is £1800, so the 170 model will presumeably be even closer in price terms to the GTi....

Now if they made a GTi with the V6, 3.0 turbo-diesel engine from the Audi A4/6/8 range (and if a Golf could be made to handle well with that unit over the front wheels...), they'd have a 200+BHP, mega-torque monster of a hatchback. I'd forgo a few MPGs for that experience... :)

I agree. After 5 years/60,000 miles the combined cost of the cambelt replacement and the DSG 'kuppling Teilen' (aka Clutch Module =engine out job with partial gearbox rebuild=6 hours + parts) means a service bill well in excess of £1300.

My brother in law works for a VAG dealer in Hannover, Germany: DSG kits will be a money earner for dealers supporting mid-life VAG vehicles. Will certainly hit the used values.

Yes, there have been rumbles elsewhere about problems with this 'box. From what I can see iti is a fearsomely complex piece of machinery, perhaps its best to give it a wide berth for a few years until the problems are sorted.

But in theory ... sounds like a great car

Do you think you'll get 30 mpg from the petrol GTI if you use the power. I doubt it. Even if you do that's still a petrol bill 25% higher.

But for me, I like the way these performance diesels torque gives you all that low-rev pull.

My brother has one (6000 miles old now) and he gets 30MPG overall. He uses the power too, although he genuinely stuggles to lose me on twisty lanes :)

not tempted by a C320CDI then?

Actually, yes. But have you driven the A4 3.0 TDi..? The one I tried was a Quattro and it was really, really impressive. Performance was blindingly good, the steering and agility were amazing and it even rode well, which wasn't expected. Even the leasing costs weren't much greater than those I'm forking out for the Golf.

I can't argue with the C320 CDi as a high-performance / economy car in it's own right, but it doesn't seem as sexy as the Audi. Not to me

Problem is, you always run out of revs

Ain't that a fact. However when you have petrol V6/V8 torque levels (which petrol engines typically produce from 3000-4000rpm) from as low as 1500rpm in a good diesel, you soon realise that the gap you've pulled on the unsuspecting performance car behind you is worth more than 2000rpm at the top end. Plus, you're getting 50mpg into the bargain (or 37 in my case) ...

Yes and even specced it all out then at the 11th hour went for the newly announced more powerful, more economical, quicker, better riding, better handling (in the dry) merc.

Didn't think the dry 3.0Q handling was anywhere near the 1.8TQ which I put down to the heavy engine.

In poor conditions I assume the 3.0Q would wipe the floor with the C.

Both nice cars though.

how did a golf tdi manage to keep up with an cl55 must be somthin wrong with your cl55 mate

golf tdi 0-60 i would guess about 8.7 or somthinlike compared to cl55 0-60 in 4.7 secs
