Having owned various bmw and Mercedes over the years, the driving experience of a bmw is far superior to that of a Mercedes. It would take something special for me to go back to Mercedes again.

Have you had a good drive in one ??? Undoubtedly the 135/140 are great but, not that it would happen - you wouldn’t see which way one went on a typical slightly damp back road....

Back in the days of the E46/39s , they were lovely cars with creamy 6 cylinders. I just find them rough as hell these days. 5 mins in Bils 430d is enough to shake every bone in your body and the new 5 is just as bad.

I think we were all little crazy in our younger years if we were real petrol heads. I remember as a 16 year old in the late 60's bunking off the Easter concert at school and having to thumb a lift the 12miles home. To my complete astonishment my mate and I were picked up in a brand new Aston Martin DBS. I dream come true:)
Last week it was my turn to return a favour and take 16 year old to his school prom and make lasting impression.

Did we score top trumps in the arrival car stakes?
Was the young chap impressed and thankful?
Did we let the car off the lead when nobody was looking?
Do we now have another petrol head?
The answer is yes to all the above.

    A 67 year old playing with 680bhp.
As Paul Simon says "Still crazy after all these years"

Had to use the XJ220, but what have I got to chauffeur it? Only me:rolleyes:

I did test drive one albeit not for very long. In the wet I agree it’s superior but that’s as far as it goes for me. The engine note was just a tad boring, just a loud drone and I didn’t think it had any character. I didn’t think much of the interior either, it felt a little cheap and not very well put together. The same day I test drove my M135i and the rest they say is history...

Having owned a number of E39’s for me it was the best 5 series ever made. The current one is lovely but lacks that character of the E39.

With time served in both I would say the BMW interior is no better or worse screwed together than the Leon I currently have. The BMW powertrain is better but you can drive the MQB chassis harder - the DCC on the VAG product actually works, as mentioned before the adaptive damping on the baby BMW is useless. The 140 seems to be better in that respect than the 135, but it's still not as good.

This is the main problem: a standard 4-cyl just isn’t going to make interesting noises. Sadly it’s the way almost everything is going...

They can sound OK when giving the full beans but definitely not great the rest of the time

For me , I just don’t identify with the ‘bad boy’ image , which I admit is my own personal perception, but I think not an uncommon one ...

Back in the 70’s a friend had a 2002 , which I thought was a nice , solidly built car , and a friend of my dad’s had a 3.0CSL Coupe , which I thought a lovely car . Those are about the only two BMWs I ever liked , although I do have a notion to get a flat twin bike .

My Honda 550/4 with a Paul Dunstall silencer sounded just fine.
    It was 1977.

The ride in the 140 is poor on non adaptive damping.

As for as interior quality, the 140 is OK, I like the minimalist look as it feels a bit more grown up.

The overall package is hilarious, it looks like every other 1 series shopping car but is a bit quicker than expected.

I took ours across Spain last Summer and it was a hoot!

That’s part of the appeal for me. It doesn’t shout riff raff in the same way that a Focus RS, Audi RS3, Mercedes A45 do. It’s much more undercover and apart from the rear styling of the exhausts, the wheels, the silver covered wing mirrors, the silver inserts in the lower front bumper replacing the fog lights it doesn’t look all that dissimilar from a 120d M sport.

Mine doesn’t have the adaptive suspension but to be honest it rides perfectly fine and I know of people that have had the adaptive suspension and couldn’t really notice any difference between those that had it and those that didn’t.

As you say performance is unbelievable and the way it delivers the power is superb. Like for like I couldn’t think of anything better with it’s 3 litre silky 6 cylinder engine

Throughout this thread I've been thinking that bike four pots sound at least OK and that it's in cars that they don't. Thought maybe it's the presence of a turbo that ruins them but the only car four cylinder unit I hear that gets my attention is the Lancer Evo unit and that has real malevolence to it - and a turbo...
