As some know I've had ups and downs over the years with my step-son. Today he turned 21, and has actually matured into a pleasant and hard working young man.

My one frustration is his lack of driving... He now works for a major insurance company and gets 50% off his insurance.

So time to move things up a bit.

His birthday present was an 04 Gold 1.6 SE. I picked the car up last week and drove it back from Cheshire. Frankly amazed. No wobbling, knocking, vibration - feels rock solid... And the kit... AC. Sunroof, Cruise, auto lights and wipers, folding mirror.... It's really quite a nice car, especially for a blind bid on ebay.

Nice looking car and looks well looked after. Gold??
Looks a good find.

Times have moved on since the days of our first cars.

You could see daylight through the floor of my first Mini 850, it only had one gauge in the middle of the dash, no radio, wind up windows and drum brakes all round.

It took a week to reach 60mph and the fuel gauge didn't work so I was playing a permanent game of fuel gauge bingo.

The upsides were I could fill the tank for £5 and if anything broke it was available from the breakers in Pease Pottage for £20 and an hour clambering around on an unsteady pile of rusting cars.

Kids today don't know how lucky they are!

I was thinking that very same thought earlier today whilst driving my sons car :

11 year old Clio 1.2
7 owners , with the first one being the obligatory "careful" one.
100k on the clock
four tyre of questionable makes
45mpg avarage
doesnt use any oil / water
original exhaust + timing belt
last years MOT cost me £4 for a ball joint , and no advisories.

It was running rough last week and a new coil pack sorted that for £30.

Worth around £300 , whats not to like

If i were to have a garage queen (SL55) then a Clio (172) would be my daily driver as i am mega impressed with the wee motor.

We did try this when he was 18. I spent a little less and one of them was a Clio. It was a bag of nails and caused no end of grief. and had no interest from lad.

I like French cars, but there is a reason I've gone German this time..

I had a 172. It was an absolute belter, prob my favourite of all I've owned.

MK 3 rust and blue Escort 1.1

Blew the engine up. Would have been rude not to

Very nice.

My step-son has just turned 17 this week. "I've been looking at Auto Trader" he announced. "You can get BMW M3s for around £1000 you know" :fail

I popped up to the M&S Food shop in Gerrards Cross the other evening. Nice chatty young lad on the till who once I mentioned old cars just couldn't stop talking about how he wanted a classic Mini (yes I thought, that should cure you!). The Mini on which I learned to drive was held together with rattle canned filler, heater did work well but all the time, and which could only get up to 50mph. The relief when I got my first Golf, a Mk2 1.3 CL. It remains the fastest car I have ever owned at the Iver to Plymouth run, managing it at 2.45. With each increase in power and engine size, the volume of traffic (and enforcement - mind you I'd never be banned for getting over 100mph in the 1.3) has made the run slower each time.

My first car was a Volvo 343 1.4. Could not wash it as the dirt was holding the rust together. Was never going to make it through it's next mot. Before I had that opportunity I discovered why coolant in antifreeze was a good idea. It departed for the junkyard in the sky...

Time to point him to Gocompare for a reality check.

Run two quotes, one as a provisional holder and a second as though he's passed his test, the difference is an eye opener.

On the insurance front I recommend Tesco Insurance with a black box fitted, it proved to be by far the best value both pre and post test for my step daughter (now 19).

Each time the renewal arrives we can't get within 50% of it with any other insurer.

Back the 90s I & some colleagues used to make regular trips from Hampshire up to a site up near Newmarket, 150 miles each way. I've just run it through Google maps and it comes up as 2 hours 43, probably about right now.

Back then sub 2 hours was the norm (and not in exotica either, the standard company ride being a 2 litre Sierra GLSi or a Ghia if you were lucky). I think the record stood at an hour and 3/4..

Cheers,

Gaz

Proves a point. The old cars lick the newer ones. Just look at the motorway.......It's always the old pug racing up the outside lane....Great brakes too as they can safely sit on the bumper of the car in front.

Same with us - worked for an organisation with an office in Newcastle city centre and one in Sheffield (Broomhill) so there was the challenge of best time from office to office - my boss did it in less than 2 hours (in a TVR 2.8S).... Try that now"!!

A good few years back my then neighbour worked about 25 miles away in Uxbridge, and when he was on night shift he routinely got to work in 15-20 mins. This involved doing 120+ between junctions 11 and 16 on the M25 (he had a high-spec Vectra). He wasn't too worried about being stopped though as he reckoned his warrant card would do the trick. I suspect the gantry cameras nowadays would be less forgiving :)

My first car was a 1964 Hillman Imp. The one with the inward camber front wheels. Used to drive that down to Whitstable from Lewisham in just over an hour.
And my son wondered why I was so worried about him when he first passed his driving test. Because we have been there and worn the tee shirt.
At least I managed to dissuade him from buying and riding a motorbike. He is now approaching 30 years and is now developed into a fairly well rounded adult.
Job done.

My first car was an Austin A40 1100 Countryman, otherwise known as a BMC rustbucket... :(

That said, we had some fun in that little car. Saw a maroon one on the road a couple of days ago, amazing how small it looked.

My brother had one and sadly rust did end it's days. Wasn't an A40 countryman the very first example of a hatchback. Shame BMC didn't capatalise on it.
