In the strange new world I now find myself splitting my time more between Exeter and Cornwall.
In Exeter I can highly recommend MBS on Marsh Barton Estate as a really good indie for Mercs - especially older models; however I'm now also looking for one in SW Cornwall - any recommendations??

Well , you have Mercman down there , a specialist Mercedes breaker .

If anyone knows a good repairer in the area , they will .

Maybe there isn't one, that's why they have a breakers 🤔

I have a home in the far south west and when visiting and need help then for non merc issues I use
Penwith 4x4 Centre in Crowlas. For merc related issues then I use Mercedes in Truro.
Hope this helps

MM moved there from Southampton since they outgrew their , already large , premises there , which I used to see from the train .

I do like a bit of lateral thinking - although I suspect salty sea air might also have quite a lot to do with it ;-)
Lots of low lying cloud, mizzle and rain in Penwith to wash the salt off and don't forget that there is very little frost so no road salt to rot your motor

You know , it would be good if we could compile , on the website somewhere , a map of the UK pinpointing all specialists known to and recommended by members .

I know there's a place people can post reports , but it isn't joined up and searchable .

This would be useful for all forum members who may have car trouble when a distance from home .

You make a good point about the more temperate climate meaning less road salting by the council. However the misty, mizzly and rainy conditions, rather than washing salt off actually contribute to the problem as such weather contains salt particles from sea aerosol. Interesting reading here Salt Air: How far inland does salty air affect metals? along with a map which shows that most of the Cornish peninsula is affected - the north coast more so.
Having lived in Cornwall on and off since '76, I can attest to having come accross plenty of very rusty horrors in this part of the country ;-) Modern cars made in the last 10 -20years with better rust proofing likely fare much better pre 2000 cars, but I would always be very wary of buying any car that had spent much of its life in a coastal region.

I don't normally keep my cars long enogh to worry about salt in the air.
This only concerns me when I have to clean the windows.
Tourists who go too fast down narrow lanes and then can't reverse down those same lanes are a bigger concern to me.
Although I live elsewhere I do try to avoid Cornwall during school holidays
