Good Sub 2k Mercedes or Alternative

We had a bit of a challenge amongst a few people I know - "biggest bang for buck" we called it. Funnily enough max budget was set at £2k also. I bagged a SAAB 95 AERO for £1400 and had it remapped for £80 to stage 1. I then stuck on a set of goodyear F1's and I think I ended up with a bargain basement performance car. Only thing that lets it down is lack of feel through steering. It is an auto.

Here's the spec which is pretty good considering price paid:

270BHP
440NM of torques
Full leather interior, electric front seats with memory
Heated from and rear seats
Electric and folding mirrors
xenon lights
automatic wipers
Aircon
cruise control
Built in satnav
Bose sound system/speakers
remote central locking
Sport mode which improves throttle response and speeds up gearbox (complete bonkers mode I call it)
Rear parking sensors

I had one of the very last 9-5 estates, a 2.3T Edition in white with all the Aero bits (as above) thrown in plus sliding boot floor plus the Aero 'chip' so it was producing 260hp. The acceleration was outrageous. A very good friend of mine bought it from me when I was buying the Vito so I still see it regularly.

Common issue on the early V70s like ours is the throttle control ECU going awol. In the US they were all replaced free of charge but needless to say in europe owners have to pay. Having said that ours is ok.
Apart from the T5 they roll quite a lot. There is a front strut brace available from Volvo that transforms the feel.

Can beat a 202 for an all round car. For 2k you should get a very good one.

Go 96 -98 throttle cable bosch 4.4, me7 9- 98 onwards uses fly by wire me7 management usually cleaning the etm cures such eratic idling there is also a specialist which mod's the unit without having to replace it ever.

9-5 Aero is a cracking car; I had one (an estate) for five years, until I bought the E55. It was in Merlot Red (metallic dark burgundy), and looked FABULOUS polished up. If I HAD to go back to one, it wouldn't be the end of the world, though I'd miss the E55K's power.

well shock horror she didn't like the look of the saab or Volvo (picky). She said she wanted that 4x4 looking one I showed her. I thought the Mercedes ML, but no she wants a Subaru Forester

Honda crv- 2.2 diesel 45mpg
