MB really bent you over on the options back then. Now you can buy the whole car for the cost of the AC & aerial options.

Oh yes. My W124 E320 coupe cost £52,500 new in 1995 (didn't have AMG wheels but did have climate and a sunroof), which is the equivalent of about £89,000 today (adjusting for RPI).

If you assume the current E350 coupe is the equivalent, which you can pick up new (discounted obviously) for about £35,000.

There are only so many procurement, platform and labour efficiencies, so something is being done much cheaper.

Not really because quite a few of the prices are wrong (inflated) according to my 1996 MB pricelist. For example air conditioning option 580 was £1947.50.
Option 221/222 Electric seat was £358.75.

The prices I quoted included Vat. More often than not the prices quoted for extras etc on car adverts are inflated to make the car look more of a bargain.
