To cut a long story short, they have just got around to digitising records from paper records for my car (a 1992 model) and noticed that after 15 years they had got the last letter of my chassis number wrong.

No one had noticed including me all these years. Each year, the MOT inspector got it right but it wasnt until now that it got cross referenced and rang alarm bells.

Rather surprising I thought.

Not at all.

It took them three attempts to issue me a correct V5 when I purchased my car.

seems rather odd it took them THAT long to realise but atleast its all cleared now

I just thought that my VIN should be cross referenced at MOT time (every time).

If this simple cross checking isnt performed then who knows how many cars are out there with false plates.

as you have said that level of integration is only coming about now... to me log books are a "guide"
