Morning

After a succession of cars, I find myself middle aged and in a Luxo Barge :D Don't get me wrong, it's a nice place to be and the other half and nipper love it but it's missing a certain something. I think it's "Drama"
Like most car enthusiasts, I started off just wanting to drive anything that I could get my hands on. After a brief flirtation with a few cars in the 80's (Moving family members cars around on the drive etc) I joined the Army and actually acquired a licence to drive Challenger Tanks, BEFORE I had a car licence!! :bannana: I then took my Automatic test in a Ferret Armoured car and finally my manual licence in a Land Rover Defender 110 :D
I left the Army and had a range of cars, Mini 850, Fiat Strada, Ford Cortina, Fiat Tipo, Pugeot 205, Renault 5, Various company cars in the Mondeo/Vectra bracket and finally, one day in 1999 I saw a car that I simply HAD to have.
The Subaru Impreza Turbo. I left the company car scheme and bought one.
I loved that car, six years we tore around, dump valves hissing, flames from the loud exhaust, proper amazing car and then the Chavs got hold of them and that was the end of that :(
I moved onto an Astra VXR... again, a quick modern car but it lacked the presence and occasion of the scooby. 3 Years with that followed by 2 years in a BMW 320d M sport back in the company car scheme.
Nice car to hang the **** out on a roundabout but oh so very dull inside. and not that quick. It was comfy though and now I find myself here with the E220
Very nice indoors, OK to look at and an automatic.
I realise that it's the smallest engine, but that doesn't seem to matter. It's a wafting Luxobarge. 0-60 times became irrelevant after the scooby went (0-60 in just under 5 secs :D ) I guess the race is on, find something that endears me to the E220 before I get bored :D
What path did you guys take to get to your Merc?
Mikey

Similar.

Had boring cars, company cars then spent about 10 years in Evos.

Kid came along, ran the Evo for a while but my heart wasn't in it anymore (as you say; chavs) so punted it and bought an old E-Class estate which was great, but a polar opposite to the Evo!

Kid 2 arrived so did the MPV thing for a few years when there were loads of prams etc. to cart about.

Looked at replacing the VW bus with a smaller estate now that the kids are a bit older and the C220 was about the best value out there, so here I am!

I kept my Scooby for rallying and track (and road legal) once you have had one in terms of performance driving it does not get any better :D, mine runs 300 bhp sub 5 second 0-60 mph and it does not get any better than that. My Merc is a 230 clk with Brabus performance kit kicking out about 170 bhp manual and I love it its a nice reasonably quick weekend driver. SMBO has an Audi A8 luxobarge running over 400 bhp and it's Ok but it's auto. I tested the E220 but for my daily driver settled on a Volvo V70 with polestar remap kicking out 250 bhp.

After owning a Scooby there's not a lot I can say to endear you to the E220 it's a solid German built car but boring and dull IMHO I couldn't get excited about it but then again neither could I with the BMW 530d

Just buy another scooby as a second car you know you want to :D and they are cheap as chips now

.....interesting....which engine is that??

D5 Polestar/Volvo market it as a conservative 230 bhp but they always come out between 238 -241 bhp and if you talk nicely to the guy that does it they will push it a little further and get you close to 250 bhp so with a few other little tweaks you are there :D on the dynolicious app mine runs 248 bhp not mega accurate I know but good enough for comparison.

I've got a Volvo V70 T5 (250bhp, not modified) - Out of all the cars I've owned it's very dull to drive and not very well put together either. That's why they are now so cheap.

The car I enjoyed the most was my Jeep 4.7 V8, the power from the engine in such a big car as quite incredible.

History is:
Ford Fiesta MK2 1l, Audi 80 Sport, Astra 1.4l, BMW Z3, Jeep Grand Cherokee V8, VW Golf GTi (MK4), Pug 306 1.4, Mercedes C270CDi, Volvo V70.

I've got the Volvo and Mercedes at the moment and over the summer I'm looking at getting rid of the V70 and buying a Volvo XC90 D5

Same as Me Volvo and Mercedes :D

My old T5 could never be described as dull it was a true drivers car well screwed together remapped to 300 bhp did 140+k without putting a spanner on it other than servicing. Another reason they are cheap is that Chav's have now found how quick they can be coupled with the fact they are not the most fuel efficient car if driven hard, on a long run mine did 34 mpg and about 25 if driven hard. maybe you got a Friday afternoon one:dk: think this will be around my 9th Volvo

XC90 disappointed me on handling much better than the Jeep though when I was looking at this type of car I ended up buying a Subaru Legacy Outback Spec b 4 wheel drive prodrive pack and mapped to 300 bhp now that was an awesome car and as much as it pains me to admit it much better than the V70 or XC90

I have driven a few cars but only ever owned two. I still have them after 7 years and 12 years respectively. They are both Mercedes. Every now and again I have a hankering after a 124 e36 or a 202 c43 but then consider the running costs. With an e220, it is the journey that is important, not the speed to the destination.

I have listed the cars I have personally owned below. My favourite has been the W124 E36 which has been a fantastic car although it really has got to the time for a change.

The worse car was a Triumph Dolomite which almost seemed to rust whilst you looked at it. The coolest car was the 1974 Triumph 2.5pi which I had at 18-19yrs. My pals had Cortinas and fast Escorts and I remember feeling rather exotic in my PI.

My e class was so good as a daily motor that I actually miss it, the C320 is a lot faster but not as relaxing and refined, I reckon there will be another E in my future.

As for volvos, the s60 with a Rica remap was the fastest car I ever owned, 165 mph was an effortless cruise, but not so nice in corners and frighteningly expensive to own (I drive 30 to 40k miles per year) so when I decided to go diesel auto only the Mercs seemed to work well.

I agree not much else can better a Subaru, mine was the wagon with the performance pack on it so had around 260 bhp, great car, but as you say everyone seemed to get one.

Moved onto a Mazda rx8 , ok if you like to scream the engine, no torque at all so it had to be kept spinning. Liked its oil as well!

Then a 3.0 v6 st220 mondeo, really nice car, just not special enough.

Now have my first Mercedes, a clk500, what machine, this is a keeper!!

In order from 1986.

I'd never actually worked through a list like this before I hadn't realised I'd owned so many vehicles. (which I'm sure pales into insignificance compared to some other members)

Mini 850 (in which I passed my test)
Mini 1275gt
Fiesta XR2 (sold to buy a house)
Mini 1000
Nissan Bluebird 2.0 SLX
Suzuki Swift GTi (my first company car)
Ford Sierra 1.6GL (yawn)
Audi 200 Turbo (moneypit)
Jaguar SIII XJ6 4.2 (Nicest riding car I've ever owned)
Suzuki Supercarry Van
Range Rover Classic
Range Rover Classic Vogue (fitted with a 5.0 TVR engine - huge huge fun but 12 mpg:-()
Vauxhall Vectra CDX 2.5 Auto Estate
Vauxhall Vectra CDX 2.0 Auto Saloon
Mercedes Vito Van 115cdi Auto
Mercedes 560 SEC
Saab 9-3 1.9tdi Sportwagon
Mercedes C180k Sport Estate
Mercedes ML300 Sport
Mercedes C220 CDi Auto

The Triumph 2.5 PI was certainly a really cool car I had one of those powder blue ones with black leather very special and quick for it's day same engine as TR6 I believe.

Bought a bargain Dolomite Sprint me self when I was 18.

It was advertised as an 1850HL in the local paper which was all I could afford TBH at the time.

Anyway the weekly Rag was dropped off at the local newsagents at around luchtime on a wednesday and I was 'on it' straight away.

Was outside the owners house in my town by 12:45 and was met by an 'owd dear' who was selling it on behalf off her brother who'd passed away the previous month.

Saw it was a Sprint which was confirmed by the Log book and engine bay so snapped her hand off with no further ado!

Mate had a mustard yellow Sprint. Complete money pit and it never really ran properly for very long. Lovely though :)

I had a dolly sprint. It ran well for a total of about two whole days in all the time I owned it, but what a good two days they were.

Haha yeah ! I also had a Dolly Sprint - what a car !

It went like stink, crap around corners and rusted to bits but I loved it :bannana:

Had my E220 (estate from 2009) for two months now. It's not an exciting car - I wasn't expecting it to be - but it's a very satisfying travelling machine that gives journeys a sense of occasion that you don't get in a Toyota. I also have a Volvo, an S60 D5 that I've had since new in 2002, and there are still things it does better than the Mercedes - there's nothing to touch Volvo seats, or the HU-803 audio unit, and it has the indicators and wipers on separate sticks, which is how it ought to be - but the E220 is so solid and competent in so many ways that it commands respect that may in time develop into affection.

Enjoyed reading that lot, Cheers guys :D
