Got the 190, suspect axle?

Hi, I just drove the 190 to the mot garage and although it goes through the gears beautifully, drives almost like a dream, the noise is crazy from the rear, I was told it could be the axle/diff but not sure yet, I'm going to see what it needs for the mot and go from there, the noise disappears somewhat at higher speeds - just basically put my foot down to check it all, I thought everyone done that, anyway at certain speeds you cannot hear anything, it is only on acceleration and becomes quite loud.

Also, other things I noticed, the drivers side wing mirror adjustable manual stalk hit against the dashboard, should it be electric? the passenger one seems to be and there is a button in the middle of the console though neither move at the moment.

Feels a little wobbly at lower speeds?!
Brakes well and seemingly more economical that I thought it would be.
Other minor issues, door cards curling, can these be bonded or do they have to be replaced?

I have bills here, it has had new front springs last year, maybe £1k spent on it prior to it being traded in, still, I think it is lovely :)

All advice appreciated, Thank you!

Diff whine is standard on a 190! nothing to worry about unless it's very bad. You could check the diff oil level and fresh oil might quieten it down a tad. Super easy job.

Wobbly at lower speeds is probably the steering linkages. Not expensive but you would need realignment. As with any old merc, check the lower ball joints, not pretty if they go.

The mechanic said he added some stuff and also changed the oil also advising I need to run it quite a while to see if it quietens it down, in his opinion there is barely any noise, to me it is like i'm on Gatwick runway with something terrible behind me, I took a gamble with the car and as such got it cheaply expecting to have some work done, it had 2 weeks mot left on it and I had it booked in, it flew through with no advisories or other issues :)

Diff noises usually occur on the over-run. It may be it needs adjusting the thrust washer/bearing.
You say the springs were renewed but have the shock absorbers? Springs support the car, shockers control it's movement.

Please excuse, you are blinding me with science, what is over run?!!

Yes they were, I can see they're shiny and have a receipt for them though the shockers look old, surely it would not pass an mot if they were at fault? I just felt it was kind of wobbly, it could just be me and it is my first 190 after all.

Over-run is when one releases the throttle i.e. coasts or decelerates without braking.
Shock absorbers would have to be obviously leaking or otherwise damaged to fail the MoT. Some cars are very softly controlled giving a smooth 'luxury' ride.

Thank you for taking the time to explain, the noise is constant but disappears at naughty speeds- I merely tried to see if it would make any difference
It could be as you say, a more luxurious ride, I had a 75 beforehand but was a bottomless moneypit, even the thought of it now makes me anxious.

Mine just whines on the over-run which I is normal. I read many were noisy from the factory. Constant doesn't seem right though, maybe get it checked by an Indy who know 190's well.

I'm tempted to stick some dynamat over the diff under the back seat.

Now that made me think, I have some pro audio soundproofing sheets which I could try under the seat like you say, I had forgotten I had them until you just mentioned the dynamat, typed it in and did not realise what it was  Thank you so much! :)

My E46 diff started to whine on the overrun at around 120k miles, at motorway cruising speeds though.

Drained diff and refilled with fresh (to spec) oil and it all went quiet again.

Most important tip - undo the fill plug first, its quite embarrasing to get stuck with an seized fill plug on an empty diff.

Don't forget to clean the breather as well

I'm not touching anything like that, my local mechanic does those large jobs, I'm not sure regards any breather, he just said he changed the oil and put in an additive, I shall have to put up with it for a little while anyhow just to see if it all works.

The breather on top of the diff gets caked and blocked causing an increase in pressure within the diff, forcing oil out various seals. Just needs removing and cleaning out.

Steering damper ( mini shock absorber) also worth doing , very easy

If your first car with recirculating ball steering it will feel different to rack and pinion cars , but can actually be more relaxing to drive .

Don’t you have Parker to take care of the oily jobs ?
And you can always send for Brains to deal with the technical stuff ...

Possibly a wheel bearing. The sound should change very slightly if you brush the brake pedal if it is.

@Pontoneer, I did have a Parker and Brains once when in some Rover enthusiast club, long story but an acquaintance around the corner has/d one too and she recommended them to help and get things done.. So I needed the brakes replacing and apparently mine would not come off so Brains said he could remove them as good as the professionals.. pic below, now this is hence why 1, the Rover is dead..2 / I bought an older Merc so as to not waste money on something like the Rover.. I think you may get the general picture, no disrespect to you fella's but i'm tired of going anywhere and hearing "That's gonna cost you" And supposed friends saying they can fix it for me..

The latest was one took Floyd- the Sprinter van to get a service, they supposedly had issues with the glow plugs and said they would not go any further, a week later it blew one out so I had a recovery and refitting charge...great mechanics...not, it is not easy finding someone that will not rip you off and do a good job.

Hmm, maybe I should post a poll with you all, is this a good or acceptable way to remove braking discs? personally, I thought (oh piglets- this isn't good) But what do you do being fair and like entwined, suffice to say none of us speak anymore...
