Every so often I come across devices which are deceptively simple but apparently incredibly effective. My mates daughter is shortly off to Angola for several days and he bought her one of these:- the STERIPEN TRAVELER a small ultraviolight water purifier that works off a couple of rechargeable batteries or solar power. I was suitably impressed. http://www.hydro-photon.com/steripen_products.html

What an excellent device. I didn't know you could get pocket UV purifiers, you can get domestic ones, including passive sunlight filters to purify rainwater to drinking purity.

That's impressive. The first glass of water would be a bit scary though.

Don't know.
We went up Ben Nevis and didn't take enough on account of it being scorching hot (until reaching the top). So drank from the stream with no purification.

Very handy - Just remember to take a supply of CR123 batteries - they're not easy to come by in Angola....and only last for 50 litres...

I may be wrong, but I'd always kind of thought that spring water from the tops of Scottish mountains and river water from Angola were two different things ;)
