Guess the cost!

Hi Nick; thanks. No break down just a hand written invoice literally listing what I noted in my first post and a total. Yes I am a mug!
Just felt embarrassed to tackle them at the time and now feel really stupid for not questioning them.
That's poor; you shouldn't pay any bills that aren't itemised! This goes for all your bills in every situation!

I asked my solicitor for an itemised bill when buying my house and they told me they only produce itemised bills in special cases. I told them I don't pay bills if they're not itemised and that's that. The bill turned up in the end and they'd charged me twice for the searches! It often pays to ask!

In that case its a different place than I used. I got a very long itemised print out and a complimentary bottle of water..... (nice touch )

Something sounds not quite right here. Is it too late to have a chat with the indy, he may have a reason for the big number or might value repeat custom more than one big sting...

Was this indi a Mercedes specialist?

Did you get any sort of quote up front??

Thank you all; nothing I can do now I guess. Lesson learnt.

Anyone have any idea what a main dealer would hae charged?

I reckon the price from a main dealer would have been about the same as you paid the indy. Unless something required extra work and you have not been told?

I agree -- I had an itemised quote for some building works -- when it came to pay the bill -- I went through the quote and pointed out where they hadn't used a plasterer for 2 days but only 1 -- etc etc and got £300 taken off.....no quibbles..

Sounds like they got you good and proper. It wasnt one of those garages on 1st Avenue was it ?

Sounds an Awful lot especially as the brakes you could have done yourself..

No point worrying too much now as its done? Live and learn

Did they quote / ring you to tell you any extra work was needed?

I would have thought my original guess of £1k would have been sufficient at a dealer.
At least one knows in advance how much things will cost and gets a full invoice.

Out of curiousity was this garage actually in Brighton itself, or further along the coast somewhere?
I ask because it reads like a familiar story for one establishment that I am (thank goodness!) aware of...

1750 +VAT

I'd of cried:eek:

On the up side - Now you're on this forum - you'll know the best places to go, next time your service is due. Oh, and you have a nice car.;)

Jay.

PS. Good guess from Tudu! :D

.

Thanks everyone!

This indie was supposedly a Mercedes and BMW expert.

From all your comments it sounds like it should have been about half what I was charged.

An expensive way to learn I guess!

I think the consensus seems to be just under £1K

I had a figure in my mind which was a bout half what was charged. But when I found out...........my first words were.............

God, f*****g hell.

As you see, I was a tad shocked.

PM me for the name of an indie near you that charges fairly and honestly.

mate, why are you not taking this up with him...

tell him you would like an explanation as to how it got this expensive.

Totally agree. Discuss with trading standards first as to the right way to approach. You will be surprised how helpful they are .... if you want to do it that way... Put the pressure on. People come up with all sorts of " errors " and "mistakes ", when put in a corner about dishonety. Everyone gets some sort of bad deal in their life time and thats ok....as long as you sort it out. Best wishes.:)

Thanks all. Don't think I'm brave enough to do anything. Should ahave asked more I guess!

Sounds like I've lost around £750+VAT, and I am consolling myself as the garage has lost what could have bee a good customer.

Zero,

dont be silly man!

Thats a lot of money... if you want, ill draft a letter for you to send.. just PM me the garages details..

ZERO, that's a very kind offer by jaymanek. Do take him up on it. Dealing with it by letter will remove much if not all of the confrontation. You have nothing to lose, and of course more than a few quid to gain.

good luck,
Rich

I've just bought a C220 and that's horrified me!
