By 'eck I'll to sit down with a brew :D

That was good, but could've done with being a multipart series. Would've liked to see more of the engineering, work that went into the engine etc.

I'm confused, although that's easily done. They kept saying they were restoring the Spit dug up at Dunkirk, but as far as I could see they built a new one from scratch using original plans.

Was there any of the Dunkirk Spitfire in the one they built?

Great programme though :thumb:

My thoughts as well.

Many better spitfire documentaries out there, I became irritated by the repetitive WW2 clips and lack of substance. 10 minutes of Duxford footage didn't give any real insight into the engineering challange of fabricating the aircraft, and as Stratman has said, how much of trigger's broom was recycled..?!

Preferred Guy's previous series where he tried to break records on land, sea, air and snow.

I also much preferred his previous series. You could not see him getting "repeat" series of this one.

Lets hope he gets back to "normal" soon.

P & A Wood (Rolls Royce/Bentley specialists in Great Easton, Essex) have a Merlin in their workshop, that they rebuilt to working condition. They show it on special occasions.

Good programme.
Don't think Guy actually did much.

Correct. Go and ask the guys who restored the flax mill at Hawes just how much of a hand our Guy had in making the replica of the first bicycle that's there?

10 minutes with a spokeshave and into his car and off. Not according to the programme he didn't.

Interesting programme, I actually thought Guy was pretty open about how little work he'd done.

There doesn't seem to be much information available about just how much of the original aircraft is present ... I guess to protect the 'restored' rather than 'replica' image. Certainly the entire airframe appeared to have been built from scratch.

The same company rebuilt a very similar Mk 1 Spitfire a few years back and there's quite a lot of info. (and some gorgeous pictures) here:

About the Project | Spitfire I P9374

It seems the only bits re-used there were some Merlin castings and non-structural bits in the cockpit area.

When I worked in RR in Hillington we still had two testbeds for the Merlin engines and they were tested on a regular basis . Standing next to one as it was put through its paces was amazing , I still have two pry bars that we made from spare engine studs that have been used and abused over my 30 years of engineering and have never broken.

having seen one of those run at a steam fair it was most impressive. I think they have had that for a while and my mother now lives in the house that was their old dealership it probably was displayed in what is now her front room.
