Worthwhile offer from the Merc Retail Group (30 branches London/Birmingham/Manchester):

We are currently offering you 50% towards the cost of your MOT, meaning you will only be charged £27.00.

In addition to this, whilst your Mercedes-Benz is with us for its MOT test, you will also benefit from the following:

Vehicle health check (touting for business!)
Wash and vacuum
Complimentary software updates and safety check
50% voucher towards next MOT

Good way for those who use Indie for servicing to get the software updates without paying (usually a Star session is 30 mins at £105 per hour). Also useful to get a second opinion of any work needed/issues...

Where did you get this from ?...I was quoted £65 for my MOT with MB Bromley last week

can't find this offer on the mercedes retail website.

do you have a link?

Big sign up in Merc Solihull and also on their "music on hold" - they told me its Group-wide...(i.e. all retailers owned by Merc themselves).

Looking at the web, I can see it on the Solihull, Birmingham amd Tamworth micro-sites along with fixed price servicing etc. Also on the Manchester branches but not on the London ones (although a lot of the links get a 404 error or drop to the "how to find us" page so the website might be part-way though being updated?).

If branches are quoting £60+ then they must be sending the vehicle out for MOT and therefore adding VAT - the max authorised fee from an MOT station is £54. Maybe some of the London branches are not MOT stations??

Sorry but I'm ever cynical.

*Both* the MOT and health check are touting for work.

Wash - great if you want paintwork that looks like someone has ice-skated on it.

The software updates - you'll be told there aren't any needed on your car (or that they've done them, but they won't be able to tell you what they did).

Do you still get the Star software updates and codes read etc?

If not, the £27 offer is better value....

They usually clean the car but thats about it....but they are going to collect the car and deliver it back, so I can't complain :)

Yes you are cynical....

3 year+ cars need an MOT by law and £27 is cheap - adding advisories on the official form that are not real could lose them their licence so I guess they would need to be really desperate.

I agree you will likely get a separate list of things that would be nice to do - "shall we do the discs while its on the ramp?" - but you don't have to have any of the suggested work done - think of it as a second opinion alsongside your indie.

My E280CDI when nearly new was a jerky piece of crap without the endless gearbox and Comand updates (admittedly the rate of new fixes has slowed recently - only 2 at the 77,000 service at 39 months old). The fixes have always been part of the handover chat with my car.

Solihull presure wash with shampoo, run over with a wool mitt and then rinse with the lance - they use their own stuff (Meguiars with Merc logo) - I have no swirls at all on my greenblack Eclass....

This has less value for people routinely servicing at the dealer (where you can get the MOT "thrown in") but for those who go indie its the cheapest way to stay current on the software.

Just booked my E230 in at MB Stratford for MOT next week .. FREE

They do give it a free health check first before sending it out to the M.O.T centre .
Nothing came up on mine and just tell them you don't the want a free car wash if you don't want it !!
Free M.O.T can't be bad , i just saved you £64 ....
Do i get a free gift

more than happy for them to wash it too .. I never have. In the 11 months I have had it, I have paid for it to be washed once!

Just Rang MB Poole who will do my MOT half price on my 32///AMG if, combined with my next service.

My next service is a B service, due in 1200 miles, :( so I figure I'll have the service and MOT done as well at the end of the month, ok it's a little early but hey, its got to be done.

The service cost is £399 inc VAT inclusive of labour and parts discount, (I get this as the car is over four years old) :) then slap on the £27 for the MOT. Job done for £426 all in.

Yep.....Im gonna spend the £64 I spent on something nice for you ;)

I wonder if it's worth phoning my local dealer (MB World, Brooklands) to see if they're part of the offer or willing to match these other London dealers.

A half price or free MOT seems like a great deal.

Trust me, they won't be getting much additional work out of me on either of my cars.

What has anyone got to lose with a free MOT? Even if they fail it, you haven't lost a penny and can get the work done wherever you like.

If you were *really* cheeky, you could rectify the faults and then take it back for a retest. Even if they charged you for the second test, you wouldn't have paid more than normal and if tested first time when the current one was still valid you get the flexibility to have time to arrange the repairs at your leisure.

I might make some enquiries :)

Hi Will

If your MOT is due, go for it and put a bit of pressure on them. Mine was due and was booked in for Sat am before the GTG at a local garage. I cancelled it as I am now getting it free from MB Bromley and they have also agreed to collect and deliver the car back, so I can't complain :). Quite amazing on how they suddenly changed their tune though and went from £64 to free.
