I have a split inner CV boot on my driver side rear axle, a couple of questions, (2001 CL500)

1/ is the half shaft a simple pull out from the rear diff or has the diff cover to be removed as i've read in some other threads ?

2/ What grade oil would be recommended for the diff (if i have to drain it to remove the cover) ?

thanks in advance

Paul

Did you ever solve this one? I need to replace the differential output seal on an SLK R170 due to a leak. Can the rear axle be removed from the differential without taking off the backing plate. Some people are saying clips need to be removed from the inside and others say it can just be pulled away from differential?

Unbolt the shafts from the diff, the prop and the diff mounts and it drops out easily. Remove the back plate and then the clips that hold the flanged shafts in place and you can then pull them out.
