Halford Mercedes paint

Gets my vote. like all aerosol paints it may vary from batch to batch but the match was quite good for an "off the shelf" product. Remember you can influence the final shade depending on the number of clear lacquer coats you apply.

i use that too, its pretty good

Excellent-You lot are like London buses-Four come at once:D
Thanks for your comments-Trip to Halfrauds to paint my mirror cover methinks.

Dont use Halfords paints, find a Leonard Brooks, they'll mix you up an exact match and the cans have much better nozzles on them so you'll get a better job as they dont tend to clog up if you use half a can you can still use the other half later, they appear to be dearer but the cans are bigger than halfords ones so you get more paint.

Does not need to be a leonard brooks - find a local vehicle refinisher supplier - where the local body shops buy their paint and stuff from - some of them will match to your car and supply a much better aerosol than Halfords. They will also supply you with better primer, filler primer and probably give some free advice as well!

Jim - If you haven't already been to Halfords, the best place near you will be 'LE Went' in New Malden. A very good vehicle paint shop - go one day during the week if you can, take something original to match the paint to - a mirror casing or fuel flap etc.

He'll be able to match the shade spot on - not so crucial for a mirror casing I know, but great service nonetheless.

Also stocks all the other bits you'll need - wet/dry paper, masking tape, compound etc etc

I know Burlington Rd very well and LE Went , as it's on my 'work' patch. I have already bought the Halfords aerosol paint and laquer and as you say it's for a mirror cover so I'm sure it will be fine. Thanks for your advice anyway. PS-My brother is really happy with the 190e.

Thanks - all the 744s I've tried are darker than my 10 year old paint and I'd like to match in a coupe 5p size of door corners a bit better.

Right, the silver base coat is now done and looking even. The can of laquer says to leave the colour (silver) coat for a min 24hrs then rub down with plenty of water and 1200 wet and dry to get a matt finish before spraying the laquer. Is this right? I'm sure I didn't do a rub down between the base and clear coat. What does the panel think?

No need. Put a good few coats of lacquer on over the base coat (at least 3 or 4, ideally more if you've got enough in the can). Leave it to cure for a couple of days in a warm place and give it a polish with some compound.

Nice one Will. Ah, while you are here mate, my brother says the dashlights for the cluster etc have packed up. Being a 190e expert any obvious things I should check?

Make sure he hasn't got the dimmer wound right down.

In the instrument cluster there's two knobs, I think it's the little knob on the left (IIRC it's the one that resets the trip counter).

Bet he's wound it down somehow whilst cleaning it/setting the time/resetting the trip counter etc :D ;)

Cleaning it? My brother...Erm-Nope. This is where we differ greatly. He's a filthy fat slob and I keep my 202 pristine:D Yeah, it's the knob on the left. He says he has tried that, but I'm not too sure. He will be coming over here later for me to have a look at it for him. I'm sure it's nothing major. BTW-he loves the car:bannana:

Let us know how you get on :)

Has he got the lights switched on? Or is he wearing sunglasses? :D:p;)
