Would you get Halfords autocentre to work on your car? Need coolant leak investigated asap, and they are only place open Saturday.

Or anyone recommend any merc specialists open till 5? Cheers

When you say coolant leak, do you mean dripping on the floor? A puddle? Level going down, for what appears no reason?
I have a similar car and my coolant shortage was caused by the water disappearing into the gearbox via the oil cooler (built into the rad, well known problem)
A bit more info may help?

Neil

Level going down with no apparent leak yes!

Taking 2-3 weeks following a top-up very small leak

Any specialist in London area, or midland

Yes Neil, level dropping slightly every few weeks tripping sensor. Havnt noticed any leak to be honest on floor etc. Although slight white coating on the pump right next to the expansion tank.

Edited................just seen your other thread showing your location so my suggestion no use.

Why is your location showing London, when you ask about a Northampton branch of Halfords??

Okay.

How are you measuring the "leak". That is critical as you need to be sure that you actually have a leak.

When the engine is hot (running temp) and has been run for (say) 20 minutes on the road. That is a good time to check the coolant level at the header tank. At this point it should be on or very close to the "Max" line?

As the engine cools it will draw coolant back into the system. This will lower the level, when cool/cold.

If you top up the coolant when the engine is cold and level is below the "max" line? The system will push out the excess through the overflow as the coolant heats and expands.

So, check when warm/hot as that is the best indicator. Do this for a couple of days. If the level remains constant then you don't have a leak and all is good. If it is still dropping and you have no obvious sign of a leak? Wait until the the engine is cold!! and remove the header/rad cap and inspect the rubber seal. If the seal is damaged then pressure will allow coolant to escape as vaporised steam that may not see. Try watching it for a few minutes with the bonnet up and the engine being revved. That may highlight any less obvious leaks.

If all else fails then take the car to an independent garage and get a pressure test done on the system.

I'm basically in both places haha, house in Northampton but basically in London most time so anywhere in those areas works

Hi Bruce,
There's no min/max line on my tank unfortunately.
Why would the sensor be tripped every morning then? If there wernt a leak? Cheers

It's only happened as the temperatures have dropped no issue in summer time

AMGeed what was your suggestion as I don't mind driving to London I'm basically there 60% of the time?

All sorts of possibilities, including: the sensor is duff, or the sensor (or what the sensor feeds) is sensitive to the lower voltage from the battery on a cold morning?

If it is dropping enough to trip the sensor? There are two possibilities:

1) You do have a leak and need a pressure test (if you can't see it)
2) You have dicky sensor.

Yeh do you know of any specialists who would be open today?

Thanks guys :)
