great thing about living in apartment block .. no kids asking for sweets .. concierge told not to let them in :)

We had 3 kids - 6/4/2 years of age - and 1 parent arrive earlier and they were as nice as anything and properly supervised. Its the older one's we can do without IMHO.
Nice graphic tho.

The kids round here are polite. It is exciting for them roaming the streets when it is dark. Harmless fun I reckon.

Something to be said for this Haloween lark I'm just starting to munch on the leftover sweets the kids didn't manage to get :thumb:

American? I don't think Halloween should be discounted just because it was not celebrated over here in Egbert's time... mind you the Christmas Tree is a nice old pagan ritual form good old Germany.

Kids seem to have a lot of fun in Halloween, whole thing last a couple of hours really and is pretty much harmless I should think?

Hallowe'en dates back to medieval times at least (long before the new world was conquered). Trick or treating in its present guise is a US invention although it can also be traced back to some medieval traditions. I think it's lovely that kids can use it as an excuse to dress up and get treats from neighbours but like others draw the line at teenagers clambering onto the band wagon when the only treat their interested in is money.

By the way, anyone ever been brave enough to say "Go on kid, give it to me, I'll take a trick." :)

My kids went to a haloween party so time that finished it was too late for me to take them out. will do next year.

we had only 1 group of kids knock on the door.... polite and good costumes....

i gave them a chocolate bar each

I believe the roots go back to the latter stages of the Roman Empire and the growing Christian religion (made easier once the Emperors had converted to Christianity). A bit like Microsoft, the Christians simply "bought out" existing pagan festivals instead of competing, in this case the Samhain festival, and applied a new Christian-oriented meaning to it.

So the existing festival for harvest and winter-preparation became Hallowed Evening or Hallow-e'en and there you go.

(Removes tweed jacket with leather elbow patches and wistfully re-lights pipe...)

I would absolutely agree with many of the previous posts, it has become utterly commercialised nonsense at this point. On top of which we get a lot of ASBO behaviour with fireworks and general yoof stupidity which I believe is mostly delayed until Nov 5th for those of you in the UK - at least we only have one night of it here in Ireland.

All that said, trick-or-treating started at our door at 5.15pm (a new record) and finished by 8pm, and the hoodlums were pretty quiet this year. The two little Fasts (Dracula and Zorro) had a ball and were out for the count by 9pm, so a good night in all.

Cheers,
Eddie
