Does anyone know of a good shareware or free ware hard drive checker?
After a rather nasty incident today my pc decided it wanted to live on the floor instead of the table  .
I got a 22inch monitor the other day and it looks like my poor old computer table couldn't stand all the weight  .
The pc was switched on and running whan all this happened.
Not much external damage (a few scrapes and a bent usb plug). No damage to the boards or anything that I can see but the drives I am not sure about.
I am looking for a good shareware/freeware disc surface checker if such a thing exists.
Any sugestions?

Other than buy a new table

Thanks
Paul

the one on the windows 98 startup disc? if not - and you want a (very slow but very very thorough one) regenitive thing - try hddreg.exe (try google - some eastern european bod made it - it scans hdds and fixes errors - it was the only thing that found a corruppted hdd of mine once

edit - link http://soft.li.ru/index.php?download=/files/32/hddreg.exe&id=645

use scandisk in XP at the very least it will check the disk surface for errors

to run, right click the disk in "my computer" and select properties, tools then error checking enable the Scan for "bad sectors" option

thats the one i couldnt remember the name of (somthing to do with a glass of wine or two last night...)

Thanks for the replies.
I had already used the windows one but it didn't tell me anything.
You weren't joking about hddreg.exe taking its time  .
Its taken from 10.30 last night to 3.30 this afternoon to check the hard drive and all is well. :D
Looks like the extra £'s I spent on a good strong pc case has paid off (authough it is rather heavy  )with no damage to the drives:cool: .

Hard drive

Paul,

For future use

You didn't mention the make of the hard drive (unless i missed it), some of the manufacturers have their own checkers.

These are extremely thorough, don't be surprised if you need to let it run overnight.

Sorry Mike I didn't say, the drive is a maxtor 200Gb (sata) thats why I was so stressed.
Never thought about the maxtor site  .
Looks like the second hard drive (a 40Gb seagate) came out unscathed too :D .
Shame same cant be said for printer and table

I shouldn't worry too much, hard disks are a lot tougher than you may think. Most are rated for knocks/shocks up to 300G!! Unless ur pc super-accelerated on its way down from the desk, it's unlikly to have been anywhere near that kinda shock.

Hard Drives

Not quite on the same lines as the rest of the thread

but I wonder just how capable are modern methods of getting info off damaged & discarded HDD's

My company has just changed out all its PC;s and apparantly the Old HDD
go to a specialist firm that has a machine that "nibbles" up the hard drives into tiny pieces!

seems a lot of trouble so it got me thinking.
