Well thanks to Steve Perry et al for their help re the harmonic balancer in this thread:

Just thought I would update everyone on this. Honest John www.honestjohn.co.uk has added a warning in his car by car breakdown section to all models with the HB problem.
I have inspected my HB and there are fine cracks appearing. I have bought the new part from MB and wanted to let you know that there is a new upadated part number: A112 035 14 00 which was manufactured in March this year. The part was in stock so you know what that means.
Anyway, I had a rather heated conversation with DCUK regarding sevice campaigns in the US and the UK and have decided on the following course of action....
I am having the car fixed by an indie (Mercaid, Hainault/Basildon, yes they do have a Hainault Branch now). Afterwards I am going to send a nice letter copying them the US service campaign and my invoices and ask them to stump up for the repair. The DEFECTIVE part will be sent/photographed too.
If they do not stump up, I will be filing a small claims court procedure to recover the cost. It is in their interest to pay my £150 bill.
Comments are welcome. The service campaign is available here if anyone wants to look.

Honest John has suggested that I also forward this campaign to VOSA.gov.uk which I will do.
There were several articles recently about Mercedes improving their Customer Service recently in the Daily Telegraph. Let me just say if this were Lexus, this would not be happening! (I think!). DCUK CS absolutely stink!
But now I have the bit between my teeth, I am so angry about this, I WILL be taking them to court.....
Watch this space!!
