Interesting take on the emerging post c-19 car market by Harry Metcalfe

Watched the first minute or so . He's basing his prediction on the sale of 4000 cars in April ??? I think that's somewhat foolhardy,

I think that is the actual number not a prediction. A lot of those may be dealers pre-registering them for targets etc.

I realised they were actual figures, I just think that basing any forecast on such a small sales figure ,especially when most dealers were closed , is foolhardy.

Read the book first, then comment. Watched it all the way through, very interesting , quite a few thought provoking comments. I wasn't aware my oil tank did 18000 miles a year, must be doing it while I'm sleeping.:)

He has driven a few electric cars recently....I was surprised that he is so open minded.

I would maybe look at a decent range EV (electric only), car if able to justify buying one new.

Electric makes sense if plugging in at home work....Not much good if you live in London, park on street & can't home charge overnight.

I now tend to buy my cars used....I drive a 2011 E220 CDI. EQE not even launched so I don't expect to be driving a used one anytime soon. Not wishing to jump into a Prius just yet. There is a distinct lack of choice & availability of affordable & sizeable EV cars new or used.

The UK government desire to see more folk in EV's is ahead of the industry which is still playing catch up on back of many years chasing moving goalposts.

Price is an issue.

Looking through the lease prices at the moment and there are deals on EVs, PHEVs, and non-plug-in hybrids.

In simple terms .... this is game changing.

He had some good insight here buy showing that a small country like the UK will not make a significant dent in the global carbon output, even though it would improve air quality locally. The government ploy is not to get the country to move towards EV, but instead to raise taxes on the majority and use EV as a moral reason to do so. As soon as the majority makes the move, they'll come up with another tax to make up for the lost revenue and find another moral justification for it.

I completely agree with him on the practicality of charging. In Texas it makes more sense as everyone with an electrical car is likely to have a garage where they can install a charging port or a legal means to shoot the thieving toerag who tries to steal a charging cable.

I know my work has sold 800 cars during the lockdown via online sales as the sales staff have been working from home

People have been happy to buy without viewing in person then. Interesting.

His over-riding message was to keep what you have and look after it well and it will cost you far less for the forseeable future.

Which made me feel much better about cradling my lovely old V8 barge. Thank you Harry :)

On a new car the risk of buying unseen is relatively low, even a nearly new car. I absolutely love driving, owning, buying and searching for cars, and there’s no one more fussy than me about my cars, but even I buy new cars unseen and without test drives. I still view secondhand cars though.

What surprises me more is that people are deciding that they’re sufficiently confident to buy financially, although I suspect it will be the end of finance agreements which are driving the timing of the purchase (or financial agreement).

People are buying new cars and I’ve been wrestling with whether to buy a new coffee machine for 2 weeks now 😁

We are in the market for a new car, well pre reg. We were before this started and financially nothing that is happening at the moment has changed. Just waiting for the opportunity to go and get one. I'm sure we are not alone in that.

The coffee machine is the easy decision - but what coffee beans to use?
For me it will be Nespresso pods. It takes away the temptation to get caught up in buying more and more beans - decaffeniated Volluto pods are perfect for our taste buds.
