Heard a nasty little rumour today regarding Becker.... Someone said that they have or may be pulling out of car audio.

I dont know how true this is, but it has coincided with me experiencing difficulty in locating Becker Grand Prix 7990 to purchase.... everyone seems to be out of stock.

Can anyone shed some light on this matter?

The official Becker site doesnt say anything, infact it looks like it hasnt been updated since 2009....

Oh, if anyone can also help me find a Becker GP 7990, this would be much appreciated...

Cheers Dee

Correct, that’s what I was told about 4 months ago when I was humming and haring over a new head unit.

Whatever units you can buy today are all that is left from the last orders, mostly with blue displays though some green, but no amber or virtually no amber displays left. From what I was told, Becker are doing in car audio but only supplying direct to car manufacturers and not Joe public ;)

Try this company

original car radios for classic cars

Although specialists in classic radios , they are Becker agents and also supply new units . If Koenigs can't get it , no-one can .

I bought an amber Indianapolis recently and was told it was the last one.

Read on a car audio site back in December last year they temp halted production to review their strategy then in Feb this year there were stories that they were pulling out of the aftermarket car audio market and concentrating on the OEM side.

I thought Becker was just a Bosch 'brand' these days?

You could be correct. With the increase in integrated ICE / Sat Nav / Display systems provided on higher end models by most manufacturers maybe the market for stand alone Third party units has disappeared?:dk:

This is terrible news for anyone wanting a modern stereo upgrade but with all the subtle OEM looks that really suits our cars, especially as the build quality so really befits old school Mercs. There is no one that provides an alternative.

I hope there is a turnaround on this...

I have heard conflicting stories on how this came about. Some say its down to a court case/hearing that becker have lost that was to do with use of bluetooth or something similar. Then someone told me it was down Becker being taken over & the new owners choosing to go in a different direction with their new acquisition.

Hi,

I have been after one too.. Did you get one?

Im pretty sure all of these retailers do have stock but have been told not to sell them until something is sorted out.. I contacted a company called Thurgo who were showing 3 in stock.. but he said he would not sell them for a few weeks yet?! He said it was something to do with the take over and warranties?

I have heard they have pulled out of aftermarket head units too, which is not great as no one else manages to produce such a great OEM look. However, I managed to source a year old Grand Prix with amber display recently and it looks great.

On here - a member selling one from a car he was disposing. Looks perfect with a mushroom leather interior.

Jay, im still looking. I too have noted the inaccurate stock-lists of some sellers on the net, but just thought it was down to them not updating their lists.... Everytime I ring, they cant get them.

I think its a case of keep trying on the net & keep an eye on ebay..... Even ebay.de is struggling with the models we want.

Just dont make sense that Becker would pull out after all these years, unless they had their hand forced, especially without an official announcement, which leads me to beleive there are developemants pending on this issue.

Maybe the sat-nav market has proved more lucarative?

Sad news indeed .

Blaupunkt , however , still seem to be producing car audio units and were always the other brand fitted at the factory by the German car makers .

Ironic , though , that there seems to be ready availability of classic radios for older cars from specialists , but the newer products are harder to come by .

Perhaps another case of being killed off by competition from the Japanese ?

well there is nothing that I know of that comes close to a becker unit for me... so I will hang on... The only thing that looks even half oem is a blaupunkt, but just not sleek enough really.

Got an old school Becker Avus & Silverstone CD changer in the 190E, must say sound quality is very good for the day, & Germanic build quality is second to none.....If M-B had made car stereos back in the day you get the feeling it would been just like the Becker stuff.

Both Becker and Blaupunkt did supply units branded as Mercedes-Benz , Volkswagen or whatever to the various manufacturers .

If you look at some of the 'special sets' on Koenig's website , you will see that there were even radios produced for individual car models !

special sets for vintage cars

In fact , if you look at the later pages of Koenig's online shop - they have modern Becker sets , some even with burr walnut fascias , suitable for newer cars !
