Have Vauxhalls marketers been smoking weed ?

I like what the Vauxhall brand offers - a 3 year old family sized car, with cheap servicing and repairs for less than £4k. Audi want customers to spend near £30k for a new A1!

Just to say that in my ten years of Vauxhall Omega ownership, I found Vx dealers to be quite good as a whole (with only an exception here and there), dealer service costs very reasonable, warranty claims (unfortunately there were quite a few) dealt with very efficiently, and original service and spare parts available in abundance from many sources. So setting aside any design or built quality issues, Vauxhalls are very easy cars to live with, and cheap to run too.

I agree with markjay.

They are not Mercedes or aim at that market and I use an Insignia for most of my miles.

like ANY car they are not perfect but were good enough to win european car of the year and are still selling well. Local dealer had new 1.8 petrol exclusives which has fair bit of kit including cruise and climate for £10. 971 on the road.

Mine is 1.8 but a bit under powered and has a couple of niggles but the styling is extremely popular and the running costs are good compared to a Merc.

Actually as I wrote that post I have just seen an ad on TV where they seem to be offering 100,000 mile warranties.... that's a lot of warranty!

Ah, would that be the famous "warranty that could last a lifetime"? Do we yet know what might prevent it from doing so?

Selling it apparently, first owner only.... admittedly that is just with a quick glance at the details, but that is what it seems to say.

Yup, states that on the TV advert(s) too.

I looked at the name and thought it was a dam good idea.:)

I worked with Opel/Vx for a number of years and this seems to fit well into the direction they were starting to head in when I moved onto other projects. One of the things being explored in the Corsa niche and smaller was how the demographic view the car - female buyers (from new) were big in the sector and one thing noticed was that many such owners named their car.

There has been a much bigger swing toward this trend recently, coupled with the much wider range of "customisation" being made available from order. It's one part of the market where Mini / 500 have cleaned up recently - DS3 and now Adam are following the trend.

Vx are also very aware of the image that the brand has in certain sectors - hence no internal objections when Omega was dropped (a great shame, I loved mine). The good thing about Vx remaining as a brand is that it can respond to the local market. There's no point in trying to fix the perception of >35 year-olds who consider then to be rusty, smoky old bangers - why bother when there's a load of 20-somethings willing to experience the brand at the entry level?

Insignias will shift by the bucketload in the fleet market - good solid cashcow there. Corsa / Adam owners convert to Astra owners (I don't know what the rate is now, but it was in the mid-60%s and rising 10 years ago), and older drivers convert down to Agila / Meriva. Generally it works.

Unfortunately being strapped onto the back of GM doesn't help. And to answer Nick's question of why not move out of Germany, guess where the deals with government and unions was done when they were in deep do-do?

What's not to love?

£4k for a 3 year old one, no rust at all and reliability Mercedes could only dream of, plus the dealers are normal people who don't look down their noses at us mere mortals.

Agree with much of your post, but have never found the dealers much to write home about.... most of them couldn't give a **** from my experience.
